US "keeps an eye" on the activities of 3 Chinese telecommunications corporations

US officials are concerned that China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom access personal information and intellectual property on cloud platforms, then transfer it to Chinese regulators.

The chairman of the US House of Representatives Special Committee on China - Republican Congressman John Moolenaar - and senior member of the Democratic Party Raja Krishnamoorthi decided to use the subpoena power to force three major Chinese telecommunications corporations to cooperate in investigating suspicions related to information security issues.

Specifically, the Committee has activated its subpoena power to ask three companies, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, to answer questions about whether they can use their cloud computing and Internet businesses in the US to access data of US users.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rejected China Mobile's application to provide telecommunications services in the US in 2019, and then revoked the operating licenses of China Telecom and China Unicom in 2021 and 2022.

However, these companies still maintain some small operations in the US, such as providing cloud computing services or Internet transmission.

US regulators and lawmakers are concerned that these companies could access personal information and intellectual property stored on cloud platforms, then transfer it to Chinese regulators or even block Americans from accessing the information.

The three corporations have not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has also not responded to this issue./.
