Recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest's request to exempt gas payments to Russia from US sanctions has been approved.

The decision is aimed at ensuring security of gas supply for the European country.
The Hungarian diplomat also criticized the previous US administration for “deliberately creating difficulties in supplying natural gas to countries in the region” through energy sanctions.
Praising President Donald Trump’s “sensible” approach to Hungary, Mr. Szijjarto applauded the world’s largest economy for following “common sense” and “recognizing the important role of infrastructure” in securing energy supplies.
The US Treasury Department has previously imposed sanctions on more than 50 Russian financial institutions, including Gazprombank. That has led to months of delays in Budapest's gas payments.
The Hungarian government has repeatedly stated that it will continue to cooperate with Russia in the energy sector; affirming that it does not want to give up any source of supply that helps ensure energy security for the country.
This country stated that diversification does not mean replacing the existing energy supply with another source but attracting more energy supplies.
* Meanwhile, according to a Bloomberg report, the US has also decided to extend the sanctions waiver allowing Turkey to continue purchasing Russian natural gas until May 2025, two months longer than planned.
Last year, more than 45% of Ankara's gas imports originated in Moscow.
These supplies have been essential during an unusually cold winter and are expected to remain crucial in the summer as hydroelectric generation is expected to decline.
