US, UK, EU sign Framework Convention on AI

On September 5, the US, UK and the European Union (EU) signed the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is the first legally binding international treaty on the use of AI.

The document was drafted by more than 50 countries over two years, including Canada, Israel, Japan and Australia.

Earlier, a senior official of President Joe Biden's administration said the US is committed to ensuring that AI technologies are not only developed technically but also in accordance with ethical standards and respect for human rights. The US government also welcomed the important contribution of the EC in achieving this goal.

Meanwhile, British Technology Minister Peter Kyle stressed that this is "the first treaty that has truly strong global impact", helping to connect a group of countries that are very diverse and different in terms of politics and culture.

In May this year, the European Council adopted the first legally binding global treaty on the rules governing the use of AI. The European Council said the Framework Convention on AI sets out a legal framework for all stages of the development and use of AI systems, while addressing the potential risks of AI and promoting responsible technological innovation.
