The three ministers met in Silicon Valley - the heart of the US tech industry - to cement the so-called AUKUS (Australia, UK, US) agreement launched in September 2021 aimed at providing a Western counterweight to the aggressive governments of Moscow and Beijing.
“Today highlights that AUKUS is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance peace and security across the Indo-Pacific,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters. The agreements will allow the three countries to “develop and deliver advanced capabilities so our soldiers can see, hear and act with a decisive advantage.”
At a joint press conference, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles stressed: "Today's meeting will be seen as an important moment in the history of Pillar Two of AUKUS and that is the sharing and development of advanced technologies between our three countries."
The trilateral meeting is the latest step in a deepening alliance that has seen deals for Canberra to buy at least three nuclear-powered Virginia-class submarines and for Britain and Australia to build a new model using US technology.
