If you want less trash on Earth, it's best not to throw it away in the first place.

It is not the loud garbage clean-up campaigns, nor the flashy media campaigns, what makes the Environmental Club of FPT University Can Tho branch (FGE) students special is the awareness: If you want the Earth to have less garbage, it is best not to throw it away in the first place.

That mindset has become the orientation for a series of activities of FGE since its establishment in 2023. "We realize that not just picking up trash or cleaning up is truly protecting the environment. The most important thing is to change behavior and behavior only changes when awareness changes," said FGE founder Tran Hung Nhan Qui.

With 45 members who are students from FPT University Can Tho and universities in the region, FGE has built a model of "change from the root", which is awareness. Realizing that green living cannot come from coercion, FGE chose a soft, persistent approach: using images, experiences, and inspiration from the pioneers themselves.

During the workshops, members did not distribute plastic items, but invited guests brought their own cups. This not only saved resources, but also inspired interest and personalized green living.

Water bottles and cloth bags are encouraged to be decorated as a fashion accessory with a strong personal touch. In many events, FGE also gives away bamboo straws as a small gift that evokes many meanings.

"Instead of asking young people to give up immediately, we encourage them to start by limiting their use of plastic. A day without using a plastic cup is a day the Earth has one less scratch. And so on, if we maintain a small habit, each person is contributing to a big change," Nhan Qui shared.

Not only does FGE appeal, it also actively creates interactive activities to inspire participants. Discussions, workshops, and creative games about the environment not only provide knowledge but also arouse interest and connection among like-minded young people.

The difference of FGE is that it always adheres to the principle: Education is not to criticize but to inspire. The sharing sessions of the Club do not fall into slogans but focus on direct connection to each person: the harmful effects of plastic waste are not only environmental pollution, but also affect health and quality of life right now.

When awareness is transformed from "protecting the environment is someone else's job" to "living green is for yourself", action will automatically arise and will be more sustainable.

Inspire to create movement

Real stories, familiar images, simple and student-friendly ways of speaking have helped FGE touch the hearts of listeners, so that change does not come from being persuaded but from empathy and volunteerism.

FGE does not operate alone, because right from the first challenges, the Club has cooperated with many groups to create events of great practical value. The Club also proactively connects, learns and matures through each practical opportunity.

Another challenge was when FGE took more than 2 months to convince the school to organize a discussion model on the environment, a new idea that many people were hesitant about. But with determination, the group successfully organized the first conference at the school and opened a series of innovations in environmental education.

The results are not only measured by the number of participants or interactions, but also by the change in thinking and the proactive spreading of the green living message from the participating members. FGE is trying to prove that protecting the environment does not need to start with big actions, but with small habits.
