This is the result of the latest survey by Robert Walters. Likewise, most Gen Z think that being a manager is stressful with little reward and they "don't want to be a boss"!
From these, we suggest five strategies for Gen Z to succeed in today's flat working environment.
The most important thing is the result, not the time or the process. The old concept that staying late at work shows your dedication and devotion is now outdated. What is needed is to demonstrate your ability through efficiency and creativity instead of just doing a certain job. When you achieve good results through smart and creative work, you will show everyone that you are capable.
Be bold and tactful in declining work that is not a good fit. But you also need to bring value to others. If you decline, explain why and offer a solution.
If you are asked to take on a project that does not align with your interests or career goals, tactfully share that you are prioritizing the area you can do best but are still willing to support others to the best of your ability. This way, you decline to take on more work while still showing enthusiasm.
Be flexible for the common good. Instead of telecommuting or short hours, demonstrate how flexibility can improve the overall productivity of your company. Suggest testing flexible schedules, helping your team explore new ways of working.
Find a mentor with clear career goals. You may not want to be a mid-level manager, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from more experienced colleagues. Look for a mentor with a clear goal to learn about their industry knowledge or experience in handling situations.
Focus on making a positive impact on the company. If you don’t want to move up the ladder in a traditional way, align your work with the company’s larger goals rather than just chasing a title. Think about how you can contribute to the company’s growth. Focusing on impact rather than title will help you build your reputation at work.
