Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the body's most important antioxidants. Vitamin C is found in guava, oranges, tangerines, lemons, and grapefruit.

Studies show that vitamin C plays an important role in eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS), a byproduct of cellular metabolism. ROS can damage the cells lining the respiratory tract. Therefore, people with weakened respiratory tracts should adopt a diet rich in vitamin C to improve lung function.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, also known as alpha-tocopherol, acts as an antioxidant. This vitamin inhibits lipid peroxidation, thereby protecting cell membranes from damage caused by free radicals.

Carotenoid

Carotenoids are a group of natural pigments found in plants that give them their characteristic yellow, orange, and red colors. The most important health-promoting carotenoids are beta carotene, zeaxanthin, and lutein.

Carotenoids are also precursors of vitamin A, found in mangoes, papayas, pumpkins, and carrots. They help the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract function properly. As a result, carotenoids have been shown to help control many respiratory disorders and may even protect the lungs from harmful chemicals produced by cigarette smoke, according to Healthline .
