The basic tax rate is 10%, and on April 9, a reciprocal tax will be applied, causing the price of imported goods from dozens of countries to skyrocket, thereby directly affecting consumers' wallets.
Mr Trump has argued that tariffs are necessary to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce the trade deficit. But the market reaction has been mixed: the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 4% on Thursday as uncertainty mounted.
Many popular consumer products – from smartphones, TVs, laptops to coffee and engagement rings – will become more expensive, economists say.

Here are some items Americans are advised to consider buying before the tariffs go into effect:
Smartphones: iPhones, Samsung Galaxy – mostly made in China and India – could see a steep price increase. The iPhone 16 Pro Plus is expected to cost $2,300 from $1,599.
TVs and laptops: Apple, Dell, Asus all manufacture outside the US. Devices like MacBooks could see significant price increases. TVs from Sony (made in Mexico) and LG (South Korea) could also be affected.
Clothing and footwear: Walmart, Old Navy and Target are largely made in China and Vietnam, meaning cheap goods may soon be no longer cheap. Nike shares fell more than 8% on the news.
Small appliances: Air fryers, juicers, blenders – most rely on components from China. SharkNinja CEO frankly admitted: "Moving production to the US is impossible."
Refrigerators: Brands like Samsung are mostly made overseas. Whirlpool and GE, which are made in the US, may see smaller price increases, but they are still affected by imported components.
Engagement rings: 92% of synthetic diamonds in the US come from India. Buying a ring before the tariff is due could save you thousands of dollars.
Furniture: IKEA – the beloved Swedish brand – has warned that prices will rise. IKEA's CEO said bluntly: "If there are tariffs, we will have to pass the burden on to consumers."
Toys: Christmas is a long way off, but Chinese toys are about to get hit with heavy tariffs. The European Union's 20% tariff will hit the Danish toy company Lego, a popular toy brand with factories in China.
Coffee: America does not have a coffee growing climate, it is imported mainly from Brazil and Colombia.
Video Games: Nintendo has paused Switch 2 pre-orders in the US as it reassesses the tariff impact.
According to an analysis by Budget Lab, Americans could end up paying an additional $4,200 a year if the tariffs remain in place. Consumers will start to feel the effects in the coming weeks.
