Although painless and benign, the longer the warts are left, the more they increase in number and size, affecting the patient's psychology and causing lack of confidence when communicating.

Dr. Le Huu Bach - Head of Medical Equipment Department of Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital - said that skin tags are also called syringomas, including two types: eccrine glands that drain directly onto the skin and apocerine glands that drain into the hair follicles.

This is a benign hyperplasia, caused by overactive sweat glands. The disease can occur at any age, any race, both men and women can be affected. However, according to statistics, women will be affected more than men and usually after puberty.

Every year, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital receives thousands of patients for examination and treatment of skin tags. In 2022, more than 4,000 cases of apocrine tumors around the eyes were treated, and in the first 4 months of 2023, nearly 1,700 cases were treated.

Skin tags grow more and more because they can "jump"?

Dr. Bach added that although skin tags do not cause pain or itching, are not worrisome and do not cause much harm, they appear in clusters on the face, around the eyes, neck, chest, armpits, abdomen, and even genitals...

In addition, they often grow in areas with many folds on the body, areas of skin that are prone to sagging and sweat, but most grow in exposed skin areas, especially the face and around the eyes. Therefore, they cause serious aesthetic loss, affect the patient's psychology and make them less confident when communicating.

Explaining further why skin tags grow more and more over time and whether they can "jump", Dr. Bach explained: skin tags originate from the skin's appendages, initially they will be small spots, then develop very slowly over a long period of time.

This is a type of skin lesion that usually does not cause obvious symptoms.

Due to lack of early consultation and treatment, patients also do not know how to prevent, so over time, the pores become increasingly clogged, leading to an increase in number and size, not the skin tags that can "jump" and spread as people think.

When to intervene?

Doctor Bach recommends that although skin tags do not affect your health much, they can cause loss of aesthetics and lack of confidence when communicating... Therefore, when abnormalities appear on your skin, you need to go to a dermatology hospital for examination.

Doctors will examine and advise you to give the best and earliest treatment, helping your skin stay smooth and bright.

At a specialized hospital, the patient will be examined carefully by doctors to determine whether it is a sweat gland tumor or not, to avoid confusion with some diseases such as: acne, milia, flat warts, sebaceous hyperplasia... From there, the most appropriate treatment will be given.

There are many methods of treating and removing skin tags at the hospital, but the patient's aesthetics must be ensured. If the patient is treated early and with the right technique, there will usually be no scarring and the recurrence of the warts will be minimized.

Too hot weather creates conditions for skin tags to develop.

There are many causes of skin tags. Depending on the cause, there will be appropriate prevention methods:

- Genetic factors: Skin tags develop due to genetic factors. When family members have the disease, the possibility of others also having these lesions is higher.

- Due to metabolic disorders of the sweat ducts under the skin: When duct cells grow excessively or sweat glands react out of control, it leads to the formation of abnormal tissues and tumors that hinder the sweat secretion process in the skin.

- Due to medical history: Some medical histories that may be associated with the development of skin tumors include diabetes, Down syndrome, Ehlers Danlos syndrome (a genetic disease that affects the connective tissues that support the skin, bones, blood vessels, other tissues and organs), and Marfan syndrome (a genetic disorder that affects the body's connective tissues).

- Due to environmental factors: This is a factor that greatly affects the formation of skin tags. If you are a person who is often exposed to sunlight, the skin structure will be damaged by the sun.

The weather is too hot, causing our bodies to sweat too much, at which point the pores will become clogged and create favorable conditions for skin tags to develop.
