Many cases of severe poisoning due to sibutramine contamination
Sibutramine poisoning, severe brain damage due to taking drugs, weight loss functional foods of unknown origin purchased on Tiktok is the condition of a female patient (21 years old, Hanoi) being treated at the Center.
Anti-poison, Bach Mai Hospital.
The patient was taken to a private hospital in an unconscious state and did not respond to calls. There, doctors discovered damage to the thalamus on both sides of the brain. The patient was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital for further treatment and was also found to have a weight loss drug containing sibutramine.
The patient said that she bought weight loss pills on TikTok and had been taking them continuously for more than a month, with a dosage of 1 pill per day. After taking the pills and fasting, the patient lost 4-5kg. Notably, the patient did not show signs of fatigue, anxiety, nervousness, trembling hands and feet, or palpitations after taking the pills.
According to observations, the weight loss pill bottle used by the patient had foreign language writing on it, without a Vietnamese label. The bottle had the content "7 days 7kg weight loss"
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen - Director of the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital warned that sibutramine is a substance that has been banned for use on humans, because this substance can cause damage, risk of stroke, angina, and myocardial infarction.
The Poison Control Center has received many patients poisoned by functional foods, weight loss coffees... containing sibutramine, some even suffered coma, convulsions, and brain damage.
Meanwhile, another case is a female patient PTH (female, 26 years old) who was poisoned by using a body detox product containing the banned substance sibutramine. The patient was admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in a state of sudden loss of vision in her eyes, with 2 episodes of decreased vision.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen said that patient H used the weight loss product for about 10 days and had very clear signs of neurological, eye, and brain damage. If used for a long time, it could affect his life. The patient bought this product (containing the banned substance sibutramine) on an online advertising for weight loss.
Scientific weight loss
In fact, there have been a series of complications caused by weight loss supplements that do not meet quality standards, and even permanent injuries caused by using weight loss drugs.
For example, a 38-year-old female patient (Quang Ninh) showed symptoms of eating less, sleeping less, fatigue, chest tightness, and talking nonsense after taking weight loss pills purchased online. The patient was rushed to the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital (Quang Ninh) in a state of fatigue, drowsiness, rapid pulse, and was diagnosed with acute poisoning, suspected to be due to weight loss drug poisoning.
However, the patient's poisoning condition was very critical, with severe arrhythmia, signs of kidney failure, and severe hypokalemia. The patient was transferred to the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital.
Similarly, a female patient (37 years old, Gia Lam, Hanoi) was also admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in a state of drowsiness and severe hyponatremia due to drinking weight loss coffee after giving birth. Doctors discovered that her brain was damaged and the weight loss coffee packet contained sibutramine, which has dangerous effects on her health.
In addition, the Poison Control Center also receives patients poisoned by weight loss supplements containing many other substances such as phenolphthalein, very high doses of caffeine, synephrine, etc.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, functional foods advertised for weight loss often contain many substances, divided into 3 groups.
Among them, stimulants such as the banned substance sibutramine, caffeine, even animal thyroid powder... The mechanism of action forces internal organs, especially the cardiovascular system, to burn fat and consume energy, without increasing physical activity. This is unscientific and very dangerous, causing incidents with the cardiovascular system, brain...
The second group is appetite suppressants, for example phenylpropanolamine (among these substances there are also many substances with high risks and toxicity).
The third group is fillers that expand in the digestive tract when taken, creating a feeling of fullness. Most weight loss supplements do not declare or clearly state the ingredients of these substances on the label, and are often advertised with excessive and uncontrolled words.
Therefore, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen recommends that to lose weight, people should go to the doctor or get direct advice from a doctor to guide, assess the condition and take specific measures for each person. The most common and safest way is still to adjust the diet and increase physical activity.
To ensure safety, experts recommend that people should not buy functional food and medicine products on social networks.
Regarding this issue, Dr. Truong Hong Son - Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine said that when each person wants to lose weight, they need to set a suitable weight goal, focus on achieving good health, good energy, health care, more joy, and more love instead of trying to lose weight.
Each person should control the amount of calories consumed to create a deficit, from which the body will burn fat to create energy to promote effective weight loss. At the same time, maintain exercise according to your interests, thereby eliminating the fear of weight.
Medical experts also warn that the use of weight loss drugs, especially unproven rapid weight loss drugs, is extremely harmful. Therefore, the most scientific way to lose weight is to combine a reasonable diet with regular exercise.
