This season, traveling along DT.720, DT.717 or on Highway 55 from Song Phan Commune, Ham Tan to Da Mi Commune, Ham Thuan Bac, you will smell the faint scent of cashew flowers in the wind.
Occasionally, we will see farmers carrying harvested cashew nuts from the fields by motorbike. In Tanh Linh, Duc Linh, besides rubber trees as the main crop, cashew trees are still on the list of planned crops because of their high income. In recent years, the agricultural extension program has stepped up support for quality cashew varieties to help people improve their cashew gardens. High-yield cashew varieties have gradually replaced old cashew varieties with low yield and small seeds that are not economically efficient. Mr. Le Hieu, who has a cashew garden of over 2 hectares in Duc Phu commune (Tanh Linh), said: 7 years ago, my family bought high-yield cashew varieties to gradually replace the old cashew garden, planting cashews on high ground where some other crops cannot survive. The new cashew variety produces large seeds with a yield of 1.5 - 2.5 tons/ha. The price of new cashew varieties is also higher than that of old cashew varieties because the kernels are larger and the seed coat is thinner, so the market is very fond of them. This year, the cashew trees bloomed early, so they bore fruit during Tet. Thanks to the income from cashew nuts, many households were able to spend more comfortably during Tet...
According to Mr. Mai Tri Man - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tanh Linh, the district currently has a cashew area of nearly 6,000 hectares, an increase of 1.5 hectares compared to 2020. In previous years, unseasonal rains greatly affected cashew productivity. This year, unseasonal rains have not appeared, so many cashew areas have good fruit set and no burnt flowers. In the past 7 years, the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Tanh Linh district have helped farmers apply new cashew varieties with good quality and resistance to some tree diseases, so the cashew yield of Tanh Linh has changed positively... According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total cashew area in the province is currently estimated at about 20,000 hectares, because some places still have old cashew trees, so the output and productivity are still low, along with the quality of cashew nuts is not as good as new varieties, so the selling price is also lower.
In Ham Thuan Bac, Da Mi, La Da or Gia Huynh, Suoi Kiet, Duc Phu, La Ngau (Tanh Linh), Sung Nhon, Da Kai, Duc Hanh (Duc Linh) areas, thanks to the soil and climate suitable for cashew trees, the cashew nut yield in these areas is also higher than in some other areas. Ms. Hoang Thi Nga in Gia Huynh said: The price of cashew nuts at the beginning of the season is fluctuating from 22,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, this is the price given by traders, because there is no price given by companies specializing in importing cashew nuts, then the price is correct. This year in Binh Thuan, the cashew crop started early, so farmers with conditions have not sold but have stored their goods waiting for the price to go up...
