Individual investors tend to increase trading and net buy when the VN-Index increases sharply or is at its peak. Conversely, they often reduce trading and switch to net selling positions during corrections, according to Fiintrade.

Data from FiinTrade - a platform providing and analyzing in-depth stock data under FiinGroup - points out many notable points in the buying and selling trends of investor groups in 2024.
Foreign investors net sell, individual investors "balance" the market
Specifically, according to Fiintrade, individual investors account for more than 80% of the total market transaction value and are the main driving force for liquidity recovery in 2024 when the transaction value of this group increases by 22.7%.
While foreign investors net sold a total of more than VND93,000 billion (US$3.7 billion) of Vietnamese stocks, individual investors net bought a total of more than VND77,700 billion on HoSE.
By sector, individuals were net buyers in 13/19 secondary sectors, concentrated in large sectors with high liquidity such as banking, real estate and information technology. On the contrary, they were net sellers in retail, personal goods and water transport.
However, according to Fiintrade, most individual investors still could not beat the market in 2024.
Individual investors tend to increase their trading and become net buyers when the VN-Index increases sharply or is at its peak. Conversely, they often reduce their trading and become net sellers during corrections.
Data shows that in 2024, individual investors increased trading and net buying significantly from March, VN-Index at that time increased by more than 20% from the bottom at the end of October 2023 to the previous peak; net buying peaked in May-June with the expectation that the market would surpass 1,300.
In the second half of 2024, VN-Index continued to move sideways within a wide range of 1,200 - 1,300, individual investors were somewhat "discouraged" with the move to narrow the scale of net purchases and reduce transaction value.
During the peak period of net buying by individuals (May-June 2024), the top stocks they net bought were Vingroup (VHM, VRE, VIC), banks (CTG, VCB, BID), information technology (FPT, CMG), steel (HPG), securities (VND, SSI), chemicals (DGC).
Except for FPT and CTG, most of the stocks that individuals bought strongly had prices that remained flat (VCB, BID) or even decreased sharply (CMG, HPG, VND, SSI, DGC) in the later period, data from Fiintrade showed.
As a result, after a year of contributing significantly to the recovery of liquidity, in 2025, individual investors seemed to be "lazy to trade", liquidity remained "sluggish". Many recent sessions did not exceed the level of 10,000 billion VND.
Which channel brings the most excitement to investors?
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Dang Tran Phuc - Chairman of AZfin Vietnam Joint Stock Company, said that bitcoin is considered the most effective channel in 2024 when it increased by nearly 130% after one year.
There was also a divergence in gold prices when SJC gold only increased by about 11%, while gold rings increased by 27%, stocks increased by more than 12%, and savings deposits increased by about 6%...
The above returns are calculated from the beginning of the year to the end of 2024, however, the effectiveness of each investor depends on the timing of asset allocation.
"Savings channels have the lowest yield but are safe in a difficult year like 2024," Mr. Phuc commented. As for gold, although the price increased sharply, it also plummeted afterwards, causing many people to be "stuck" because of "chasing the peak".
Commenting on investment channels next year, Mr. Phuc said that gold is unlikely to increase much, while stocks with expectations of market upgrades may be more positive than last year.
So if investing in stocks, which group of stocks will be of interest? Answering this question, Fiintrade's statistics from the strategic reports of 13 securities companies show that there are some notable points about choosing potential stocks for 2025.
Specifically, HPG of Hoa Phat and TCB of Techcombank are two stocks that are assessed by 13 securities companies as having potential in 2025.
In addition, leading the list of potential stocks for 2025 are many representatives from the banking industry (VCB, BID, CTG, VPB, ACB), Oil and Gas (PVD, PVS), consumer goods (MWG, FRT, PNJ, VHC), real estate (KDH, NLG, KBC...).
However, this list has very few stocks in the construction and materials industry, although public investment disbursement is believed by most securities companies to be an important driving force for 2025.
As for FPT, FRT was selected by about 8 securities companies but its price increase potential is quite modest compared to other stocks.
This is completely understandable because these are 2 stocks with outstanding performance compared to the general market in 2024 (FPT increased by 85%, FRT +74%, VN-Index +12.1%).
