Heavy rain over a large area, Hue increases water flow regulation of 2 reservoirs to ensure dam safety

Faced with the situation of prolonged heavy rain over a large area, Thua Thien Hue has requested the operation and regulation of Huong Dien hydropower reservoir and Ta Trach reservoir to increase flood prevention capacity, ensuring the safety of the dam and downstream areas.


According to the Hydrometeorological Station of Thua Thien Hue province, from 7am to 10am on October 30, there will be heavy rain and very heavy rain in the province, with total rainfall ranging from 25-90mm.

It is forecasted that from 10am to 4pm on October 30, moderate to heavy rain will tend to spread throughout the province, with some places experiencing very heavy rain; total rainfall will generally be 30-100mm, with some places over 150mm.

In the face of widespread heavy rain, at 10:00 a.m. on October 30, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Thua Thien Hue province ordered the operation and regulation of Huong Dien Hydropower Reservoir and Ta Trach Reservoir.

Accordingly, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Thua Thien Hue province ordered the operation of Huong Dien hydropower reservoir through the spillway and turbine with a gradually increasing flow, avoiding sudden changes of about 400-700m3/s. The time to start gradually increasing the flow of Huong Dien hydropower reservoir is 3:00 p.m. on October 30.

For Ta Trach reservoir, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Thua Thien Hue province ordered to adjust the operating flow through the spillway and turbine with a gradual increase in flow, avoiding sudden changes of about 350-700m3/s. The time to start increasing the operating flow of Ta Trach reservoir is at 2:00 p.m. on October 30.

These operating orders for Huong Dien Hydropower Reservoir and Ta Trach Reservoir were issued to gradually lower the reservoir water level, increase flood prevention capacity, and ensure the safety of the dam and downstream areas.

The water level of Huong Dien hydropower reservoir at 9:00 a.m. on October 30 was at +55.01 m, the flow to the reservoir was 1,129 m3/s, the flow downstream was 183 m3/s.

Ta Trach Lake water level at 9:00 a.m. on October 30 was at +36.37m, inflow to the lake was 375m3/s, downstream water flow was 239m3/s.

The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Thua Thien Hue province requested localities downstream of Huong Dien and Ta Trach reservoirs to strictly prohibit boating, firewood collection, fishing, etc. on the river and at the same time notify people to proactively prevent.

According to forecasts, from the evening of October 30 to October 31, the water level on the Huong and Bo rivers in Thua Thien Hue will continue to rise and peak at approximately alert level 2.
