During the 3 days of March 27-29, the provinces of Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Son La, Nghe An, Quang Tri experienced hail and thunderstorms. Although the Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that it was due to the influence of cold air strengthening and compressing the low pressure trough, combined with high-altitude wind convergence from 1,500 - 5,000 m, the consequences of the natural disasters were quite large.

Is it unusual for hail to appear from the North to the Central region?

According to statistics, hail and storms in the past few days have injured one person, damaged or destroyed nearly 600 houses, and damaged hundreds of hectares of crops. The estimated damage is in the billions of dong.

Explaining this phenomenon, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention said that hail is a phenomenon in which rainwater condenses into rocks and ice chunks of various sizes that fall down, mixed in with the rain showers. In severe rain conditions, hail only occurs for about 5 - 30 minutes.

Hail is formed by continuous up and down convection air currents. If the temperature in the clouds is minus 20 degrees Celsius, the water vapor in the clouds will automatically form small ice particles and fall down. The ice particles in contact with the lower cloud layer will turn into water droplets with a temperature below 0 degrees Celsius. When they encounter continuous air currents rising from below, the ice particles will become larger, reaching a certain weight, they will fall down and form hail.

"The North is in the transitional season, so there are weak cold air masses flowing down, when meeting high temperatures from the northern mountainous provinces, creating conditions for strong air disturbances, causing clouds to develop, causing thunderstorms, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind," the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention analyzed.

The agency said that the recent hailstorms were not unusual. Hailstorms usually occur during the changing seasons (March - May, peaking in April every year).

According to forecasts, after this hailstorm, the North will experience increased temperatures from April 1 to 4, with some places experiencing hot weather and some places experiencing extremely hot weather.

Meanwhile, the Southern region on March 30-31 will have hot weather, some places will have severe heat with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 37 degrees Celsius. The lowest relative humidity will be 45-50%. The Central Highlands region will have localized heat with the highest temperature of the day in some places over 35 degrees Celsius.
