A woman in Virginia (USA) bought an old glass bottle at a store to donate money to charity and unexpectedly sold it for $107,100 (2.6 billion VND).
In June, Jessica Vincent went to a Goodwill store in Hanover County, Virginia, where she was selling lamps, glassware and other items for charity. Nothing really caught her eye until she saw a shiny glass vase.
There is an M on the bottom of the bottle, which she believes stands for Murano, an island off the coast of Venice and a long-standing glassmaking spot in Italy.
“I had a feeling it was between $1,000 and $2,000, but I wasn’t sure until I did more research,” she said. The bottle had no price tag, and Ms. Vincent said she would pay no more than $8.99, before the cashier told her it was only $3.99.
After returning home, she joined glass identification groups on Facebook to do more research. Some members said the bottle appeared to have been designed by the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa and advised her to contact Wright Auctions (USA).
Experts concluded that the bottle was part of the Penellate series designed by Mr. Scarpa in 1940. It is unclear how many similar bottles were made.
The auction house recently sold the bottle for $107,100 to an anonymous private art collector in Europe. Ms. Vincent received $83,500 and the auction house collected $23,600.
