In order to change the structure of crops and livestock in agricultural production to bring about economic efficiency for the family, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, a farmer residing in Khanh Hoi hamlet, Nga Sau town, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province is one of the farmers leading the production movement, knowing how to apply scientific and technical advances, changing crops to promote efficiency in local production.
It is known that Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan has a land area of 0.4 hectares. Previously, Mr. Tuan planted orange trees for a while and became quite rich thanks to orange trees.
By 2018, the pomelo model had yellow leaves, so he boldly switched to choosing Ido longan trees to plant instead of pomelo trees.
Thanks to his diligence and hard work learning from many mass media sources and local agricultural technicians, Mr. Tuan's longan garden is now bearing fruit for the third year.
This 2024 crop, the specialty longan tree has stable fruit production waiting for harvest, traders come to deposit at a price of 15,000 VND/kg.
With 150 Ido longan trees of Mr. Tuan, the estimated yield is about 8 tons of fruit, Mr. Tuan also earned 120 million VND.
Mr. Tuan added: This Ido longan tree is also easy to grow. Previously, the pest that caused the longan tree to be infected with the witch's broom disease was the outbreak of velvet spider mites that developed very strongly, spreading the disease, thereby reducing the productivity and yield of the longan tree, making the gardeners very miserable.
But recently the pests of these two species have been limited so longan growers do not have to worry.
The current difficulty for him is that the longan flowering process is not as expected, because if this longan tree is not properly cared for, it will produce flowers unevenly, resulting in low productivity.
Looking forward, after harvesting this special longan crop, Mr. Tuan regularly contacts agricultural extension technical staff to share support, hoping to promise that next year's crop will be able to handle flowering, care for and nurture the fruit to achieve optimal productivity and yield.
Through the model of growing specialty trees, it shows that in the current climate change situation, farmers cultivating fruit gardens in particular, and agricultural production in general, need to change their mindset from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economics ".
Thanks to flexible conversion of cropping patterns, new production models can fully exploit their potential. Farmers can invest properly and apply technical advances to contribute to production according to market mechanisms, adapt to climate change, and be more safe and sustainable.
