On August 20, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Aykhan Hajizade confirmed that the country had officially applied to join the BRICS Group of Developed Economies on the same day.

The move came after Azerbaijan and China adopted a joint statement on establishing a strategic partnership in early July, according to News AZ . In the statement, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS and Beijing welcomed cooperation with Baku within the framework of this organization.
Russia also recently supported the aspirations of Azerbaijan - a country in the Caucasus region, to join BRICS, as shown in the joint statement on August 19 between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev when the Kremlin leader paid an official visit to Baku.
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization with 10 members. Since its inception in 2006, the bloc has undergone two phases of expansion. In 2011, South Africa joined the original group of Brazil, Russia, India and China.
In January 2024, BRICS admitted five new members including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Egypt.
Dozens of other countries have also expressed interest in joining the organization.
