According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first 5 months of this year, the export turnover of shellfish products of our country reached 63 million USD. Accordingly, most shellfish products recorded strong growth.

Specifically, scallop exports increased by 42%, oysters increased by 31%, clams and snails recorded increases of 18% and 9% respectively compared to the same period last year.

Notably, after a breakthrough growth in 2023, oyster exports - a type of seafood considered a cheap "panacea" of Vietnam - continued to grow strongly, earning nearly 7 million USD in the first 5 months of this year. In May alone, the export turnover of this group of seafood products increased by 52% compared to the same period last year.

According to VASEP, Vietnam mainly exports fresh and frozen oysters. Our country's oyster products have been exported to more than 10 countries in the world, mainly in Asia.

Taiwan is the largest consumer market for Vietnamese oysters, accounting for 82% in the first 5 months of this year. Thus, by the end of May 2024, Taiwan had spent about 5.7 million USD to import this type of seafood from our country.

In addition, our country is strongly increasing oyster exports to neighboring Laos. In the first 5 months of this year, exports of this "miracle drug" to Laos increased 3 times compared to the same period in 2023, reaching more than 713 thousand USD.

Vietnam currently has many localities developing large-scale oyster farming areas. The total oyster farming area in our country is about 3,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in provinces such as Quang Ninh, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria - Vung Tau...

In the Vietnamese market, oysters are usually divided into two types: whole, unprocessed oysters or shelled oysters. The price of whole oysters is very cheap, only from 20,000-50,000 VND/kg depending on the type and time; cleaned oysters are more expensive, about 60,000-90,000 VND/kg.
