Rated 26 with 3.5 stars, coconut candy is described by Taste Atlas as "a traditional Vietnamese candy, originating from Ben Tre province, which is famous for its delicious coconuts."
"A mixture of shredded coconut, coconut milk, coconut cream, sugar and malt syrup is put into a large pan by the workers, stirring continuously until it turns caramel and thickens.
The mixture is then poured into a mold, cooled and cut into rectangles, wrapped in rice paper to prevent sticking, then wrapped in regular paper soaked in oil," a famous website wrote about the coconut candy making process.
Nowadays, besides the traditional type, coconut candy has many variations with more exotic flavors such as roasted peanuts, pandan leaves or durian.
According to some documents, coconut candy appeared in 1810, originating in Mo Cay district, Ben Tre province. Initially, people in the area called it Mo Cay candy. Over time, many people adjusted the processing method and created the flavor as it is today.
Coconut candy is very soft and chewy. The flavor of the candy clearly reflects the taste of Western people, which is a sharp sweetness and fragrant coconut flavor. When eaten, the candy will gradually melt in the mouth.
