A university in the state of New South Wales (Australia) has announced that it will stop accepting Vietnamese students from five provinces and cities: Hai Phong, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Hai Duong.
Information from some Vietnamese study abroad consulting companies said that they have received notice from Wollongong University (in New South Wales, Australia) about updating information on reviewing applications for Vietnamese students, effective from August 15 until further notice.
Accordingly, the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the University of Wollongong College (UOWC) will not accept applications from students from five high-risk provinces in Vietnam, including Hai Phong, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Hai Duong. The school will continue to apply the genuine learner assessment (GS) process and require additional financial documents for all provinces and cities, except for students from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.
In addition, students from other cities/provinces (not included in the 5 provinces above) need to satisfy the GS review and provide additional financial documents before receiving an admission letter.
UOW/UOWC also does not offer an English language pathway combined with a main course for Vietnamese students, except for students from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.
These two schools only start evaluating GS 6 months before the course start date or at the stage where the offer of admission has been received and academic requirements are met, such as waiting for the final grade 12 transcript or waiting for a university degree. In the case of waiting for English scores such as IELTS/PTE… the school will not consider GS until the English requirements are met.
The University of Wollongong is ranked 162nd in the world and 12th in Australia, according to the QS World University Rankings 2024.
In February 2024, the South Australian Department of Education also announced a temporary suspension of applications from students in Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh to public secondary schools (grades 1-12).
