In 2016, Mr. Tuyen quit his job as a coal worker in Bac Giang and returned to his hometown to start a business. With the capital he had from his days as a worker, combined with a bank loan, he bid for a low-lying rice field of about 20,000 square meters in the commune, built embankments, raised fish, planted trees, built roads, and brought electricity.
At first, he bought cows and calves to raise, then sold them to serve the people in the commune, raised 3 ponds of tilapia, grass carp, carp... At that time, the profit from his herd of 25 cows was about 200 - 250 million VND/year; from raising fish was about 200 million VND/year.
The industrial duck farm model of Mr. Phan Trung Tuyen's family in Dong Cam commune (Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong) is built on the surface of a pond.
Realizing that raising cows is hard work and has low profits, he switched to raising ducks in 2020. Introduced to the industrial duck farming model, which will sell ducks faster than free-range ducks, he researched and built a duck pen on the pond surface; at the same time, he still raised ducks on the available rice fields.
"Industrial ducks raised in cages need temperatures depending on the weather conditions. Bathing, eating, and sleeping times must also be scientific," said Mr. Tuyen.
His family's duck coop is open, in the summer he uses a fan to cool down and takes advantage of natural wind, the water source must be clean, in the winter he designs a closed canvas enclosure to keep the ducks warm. He also cleans the coop every day.
Mr. Tuyen's innovation in animal husbandry is to build a duck pen on the pond surface, taking advantage of the amount of duck manure discharged as fish feed. However, not all types of fish are suitable for duck manure. Since 2023, he has introduced basa fish into the pond and found that they have grown well. It only took about 20 million VND to buy 10,000 fry to release in the duck pond, without spending extra money on fish feed, after 1.5 years he earned nearly 600 million VND from basa fish.
“Raising any animal has risks and ducks are no exception. It is important to find solutions and ways to overcome them,” Tuyen shared. According to Tuyen, when raising ducks, you need to pay attention to the feeding process, medication, and weather. You must remember the timing of each flock of ducks to schedule vaccinations and appropriate feeding. In addition, you must closely monitor the weather to prevent diseases in the ducks.
Each year, the duck flock brings in about 600 million VND in profit.
The flocks of ducks he raises are consecutive, so each month he sells about 12,000 ducks. Tuyen's family's ducks are consumed in some neighboring provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang. Each year, the ducks bring in about 600 million VND in profit. This duck farm also creates seasonal jobs for some local workers with an income of about 600,000 VND/day.
In addition, since the early days of building the model, he has planted 1,000 Ben Tre coconut trees. Up to now, each tree yields about 50 - 70 fruits/year, he sells both water coconuts and coconuts for worship during Tet.
In 2023, Mr. Tuyen was one of 14 typical young entrepreneurs recognized by the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, Secretary of Kim Thanh District Youth Union, assessed that Tuyen's garden - pond - barn model is one of the typical rural youth start-up models in the district. With a spirit of eagerness to learn, not afraid of difficulties and hardships, Tuyen has overcome challenges to successfully start a business in the agricultural sector. At the same time, he also inspires passion and shares experiences with many other young people in starting a business, contributing to building a prosperous and strong homeland.
