Data from global cybersecurity company Kaspersky shows a 31% increase in threats compared to the number detected in 2020.
Cyberattacks continue to target businesses in Southeast Asia
The report found that cybercriminals carried out an average of 36,552 online attacks against Southeast Asian businesses every day in 2023.
Cyber threats, also known as online threats, are a type of cybersecurity risk that can cause problems or unwanted behavior on the internet. Here, online threats can arise from security vulnerabilities in user devices, website developers/operators, or web services. Regardless of the purpose or cause of the attack, the consequences of online threats can be devastating for both individuals and organizations.
According to the report, threat actors targeting businesses in the Philippines increased by 243%, from 492,567 incidents in 2022 to 1,691,167 in 2023. Companies in Singapore also saw an 86% increase in cyberthreats, from 889,093 cases in 2022 to 1,653,726 in 2023. Meanwhile, cyberattacks in Thailand increased by 24%, with the number of cyberthreats targeting businesses increasing from 1,232,311 in 2022 to 1,531,430 in 2023.
The above figures are based on data from Kaspersky B2B security products, installed in businesses of different sizes.
"Economic experts assess that the economies of key countries in Southeast Asia have positive growth prospects in 2024. At the same time, the digital economy in the region is constantly growing, opening up potential opportunities for both individuals and businesses. Most governments in the region are developing policies to promote the digital economy and infrastructure, so local businesses need to prioritize strengthening cybersecurity defenses to combat online threats that could hinder the benefits of digital transformation," said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.
A recent study found that businesses in Southeast Asia are increasingly aware of the link between digital transformation and the rise of cybersecurity threats. Specifically, more than a quarter (28%) of businesses surveyed admitted that their organizations are more vulnerable to cyberattacks due to their continued push towards digital transformation.
According to 16% of survey participants, external pressure has caused network incidents to increase continuously, but thanks to that, users have also proactively implemented stricter network security measures.
To help businesses in Southeast Asia build a strong cybersecurity defense, Kaspersky has launched its new enterprise suite - Kaspersky Next. This is a new generation of security products for businesses, designed to combat sophisticated cyberattacks in today's technological age. Whether you need comprehensive endpoint protection, advanced EDR technology or enhanced cybersecurity with XDR, Kaspersky Next delivers powerful, adaptive, cloud-based protection.
