The link between sleep and blood pressure

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/06/2023

Insufficient sleep over a long period can increase blood pressure. Explaining the reasons for this, Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, working at the Mayo Clinic (USA), stated on CNET that sleep helps our bodies recover and regulate important hormones, contributing to stress control and metabolism.

Not getting enough sleep over a long period of time can increase blood pressure.

Lack of sleep can increase cortisol levels, the stress hormone. The buildup of high cortisol levels over time can raise blood pressure, leading to a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.

A recently published study has found a direct link between insufficient sleep (less than 5 hours per night) and the risk of heart attack. In addition, certain medical conditions such as sleep apnea and insomnia have also been shown to harm our cardiovascular health over time, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Furthermore, insomnia and poor sleep quality can easily lead us to harmful rather than beneficial habits. It makes the body tired, increases cravings, and makes us less inclined to exercise. These are all factors that directly impact blood pressure and cardiovascular health.

To elaborate, expert Lopez-Jimenez stated: "In fact, regular physical activity is one of the prerequisites for keeping the heart healthy. Maintaining an exercise routine can also lower blood pressure, help us control cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and other factors that improve heart health."
