Andreea Vanacker experienced intense pain in the right side of her face whenever she spoke due to a brain tumor compressing a nerve.

The pain recurred every time she talked, laughed or chewed. "It was a sharp pain like an electric shock on the right side of my face whenever I moved my facial muscles," Ms Vanacker said.

When she went to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor diagnosed her with trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes severe pain due to an abnormality in the trigeminal nerve. She was scheduled to see a neurologist.

However, in the days leading up to her appointment, the pain became increasingly severe. Ms. Vanacker also began to lose her balance, making it difficult for her to walk.

During this visit, the doctor discovered a large tumor in Ms. Vanacker's brain. Fortunately, the tumor was benign. It could have been growing silently in her brain for at least 10 years without her knowing. The pain on the right side of her face was caused by the tumor pressing on the trigeminal nerve.

When the doctor informed her of her condition, Ms. Vanacker was shocked. She prided herself on having a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly.   Get at least 7 hours of sleep per night.

The only way to treat it is to surgically remove the brain tumor. However, the operation is very risky. In the worst case, Ms. Vanacker could be left partially paralyzed or have difficulty walking for the rest of her life.

After much deliberation, she decided to have surgery. The woman went to one of the best neurologists in Montreal. The surgery lasted 9 hours and was successful.

The tumor was removed without damaging the nerves that control Vanacker's facial muscles. She underwent a lengthy recovery. About five months after the surgery, she was able to do light exercise, gradually moving on to more advanced exercises. About a year later, the pain from the surgery on her skull has completely resolved and there have been no complications, according to Insider .
