Breakdancing, part of hip hop culture, has become an official sport at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Breakdancers are judged on criteria such as execution, musicality, originality and technique.
Loved for its athleticism and creativity, breakdancing also comes with health risks such as carpal tunnel syndrome and neurological problems.
Along with this is a condition known as "headspin hole", which begins with hair loss and then develops into a tumor at the top of the head.
According to CNN , in a report published this week in the medical journal BMJ , doctors treated a benign tumor that grew more than an inch thick in a 30-year-old man who had been breakdancing for nearly 20 years.
This condition, sometimes referred to as “breakdance bulge,” is thought to be caused by repetitive friction between the scalp and the floor, along with constant pressure during headspins, that builds up over years of breakdancing.

“Repeated stress on the skull, scalp and skin can cause inflammation, and over time, minor bleeding can cause the skin to thicken and scar tissue to form, creating the characteristic bulge,” explains Dr Christian Baastrup Søndergaard, a neurosurgeon from Rigshospitalet Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, who co-authored the report and treated the patient.
The patient said he felt uncomfortable, painful, and often had to wear a hat to cover the tumor when going out.
After the tumor was surgically removed, the patient felt much better. "Many people told me that they no longer noticed the bulge and that my head looked completely normal," the patient said.
