(BLC) - Taking advantage of the many streams and cool climate, in recent years, people in Sin Suoi Ho commune (Phong Tho district) have raised cold-water fish and rapidly expanded the area over the years.
Sin Suoi Ho Commune is known by many as the leading locality in developing community tourism in the province. Every year, the commune attracts a large number of tourists to visit, experience and explore. Not only that, this is also a locality rich in Mong ethnic cultural identity; has great potential to develop temperate fruit trees; increase income from growing tea, cardamom, forest care and protection and recently, raising cold-water fish.
Raising cold-water fish brings high income to the family of Mr. Sung A Phong (left) in Sin Suoi Ho village.
Mr. Sung A Phong's family in Sin Suoi Ho village used to live on growing orchids, but when people grew more orchids, the output became more difficult, and recently the orchids got sick, the economic efficiency decreased, so he decided to change his economic direction to raising cold-water fish. Because he learned that the market for selling cold-water fish is easy, has high economic value, and quickly recovers capital, while the natural conditions and climate of the village are very suitable for fish farming; many tourists when coming to the village want to eat sturgeon and salmon, but the village does not have fish to serve.
Getting started, his family invested nearly 200 million VND to buy land, build 2 tanks with a volume of 160m3 and continued to invest 150 million VND to buy 900 sturgeon and food to raise. Fortunately, under his care, the fish grew well. With a retail price of 250,000 VND/kg of sturgeon and 180,000 VND/kg of salmon, after deducting the costs of the first batch of fish farming, his family earned a profit of 250 million VND. Currently, in his family's tank, there are 3,000 salmon and sturgeon ready for sale; 1,000 small sturgeon fry. In his direction, from now until the end of 2024, he will continue to invest in expanding the scale of cold-water fish farming.
As a hard-working, diligent, and change-minded farmer, seeing the prospects of cold-water fish farming, Sung A Phenh, also in Sin Suoi Ho village, has also changed direction. In early 2023, he sold 5 of his family's buffaloes and borrowed 50 million VND from the Phong Tho District Social Policy Bank Transaction Office to invest in building 3 fish tanks with a volume of 200m3; in May 2023, he bought 2,000 sturgeon to raise. Currently, his family's fish are growing well. His family plans to raise 6,000 more sturgeon in 2024.
We learned that cold-water fish farming has been carried out by the people of Sin Suoi Ho commune since 2019 and has developed strongly since 2022. It is mainly concentrated in the villages of Sin Suoi Ho, Den Sung, Chang Phang, and Sang Ma Pho. Cold-water fish farming requires large investment capital and strict care techniques. Therefore, in order to create favorable conditions for people to develop cold-water fish farming, the commune has encouraged and guided people to visit and learn from cold-water fish farming facilities with many years of experience in and outside the province. Encourage previous fish farming households to pass on their experiences to later farming households.
Mr. Sung A Phenh's family in Sin Suoi Ho village uses nets to cover the tank to limit the heat from affecting the newly raised sturgeon.
In the villages, they have also proactively established cold-water fish farming cooperatives to create a bridge to connect and support each other in economic activities. On the part of the commune's associations and unions, they have signed a trust with the Phong Tho District Social Policy Bank Transaction Office to lend capital to members to solve initial difficulties. Thanks to that, the number of households raising cold-water fish in the commune has increased significantly.
In the coming time, Sin Suoi Ho commune will continue to encourage people to expand the scale of cold water fish farming at the head of the streams to serve the needs of tourists and supply the market. Aiming to make cold water fish farming a new and effective direction, helping people increase their income, improve their lives, and be one of the factors promoting local socio-economic development in the border area.
