Baby girl D.TM was born at 39 weeks of gestation, weighing 3.5kg, in Vinh Phuc on the morning of February 20th. Diagnosed with pulmonary artery stenosis at 31 weeks of gestation, she was immediately transferred to Bach Mai Hospital for her first intervention using pulmonary artery valve dilation.
Three days later, the baby underwent a second intervention using the ductus arteriosus stent placement technique. This is a difficult and delicate technique, especially for newborns, because their blood vessels are extremely fragile.
Doctors at Bach Mai Hospital have successfully intervened in the case of a newborn with a congenital heart defect.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Deputy Director of the Pediatric Center at Bach Mai Hospital, the baby suffered from severe pulmonary artery stenosis and right ventricular hypoplasia, requiring early intervention immediately after birth; otherwise, it would be life-threatening.
Regarding the difficulties in this surgery, Dr. Kien said that the team had to intervene twice with the child because the child's right ventricle was hypoplastic. Therefore, after dilating the aortic valve, the child needed to recover. And three days later, the stent was placed to ensure the highest level of safety.
Newborns are born with low birth weight and weak immune systems, requiring lengthy interventions lasting 1-2 hours under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation. In particular, these infants are often cyanotic due to oxygen deprivation, so quick and decisive action is needed to establish blood flow to the lungs as quickly as possible.
After two interventions, on the morning of February 29th, D.TM. recovered, was healthy, and was discharged from the hospital, much to the joy of her family, parents, and the medical team who treated her.
According to the recommendations of Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, Director of the Pediatric Center at Bach Mai Hospital, the case of baby D.TM and many other cases successfully treated at the Pediatric Center demonstrates the important role of fetal echocardiography. Therefore, in addition to regular prenatal ultrasounds, mothers should also have fetal echocardiography to screen for congenital heart defects in their fetuses while still in the womb, so that they can be diagnosed and treated promptly after birth.
