Orphaned mother, sleeping on leaves

BPO - "Orphans eat rice with fish/Orphans sleep on leaves" is the ironic situation of the children of Nguyen Dang Ty (born in 1977) in Hamlet 8, Loc An Commune, Loc Ninh District. The two children are still young but lost their mother early, they are not yet aware of their mother's eternal departure. The eldest son Bao Nam, 11 years old, said: "My mother has followed Buddhism, I don't know when she will return". Looking at the two innocent children makes adults' hearts ache.

Mr. Ty was born into a family of 7 siblings, from Quang Tri. His father died early. Life in the countryside was difficult. After getting married to Ms. Phan Thi Nga (born in 1979) and giving birth to their first son, Nguyen Dang Bao Nam, who was about 1 year old, in 2015, Mr. Ty and his wife moved to Loc An commune, Loc Ninh district, to rely on their eldest brother to develop their economy .

Here, Ty's family lives in the old house of his eldest brother. Every day, Ty works as a construction worker or a hired hand to earn a living, while Nga stays home to take care of her young children and make wine to sell to local shops. Life in a foreign land is still unfamiliar and unstable, and then the eldest brother passes away. Losing a support to rely on makes Ty's family life unstable. However, with his hard-working nature, Ty gradually stabilizes his life and welcomes his daughter, Nguyen Ngoc Nam Anh (born in 2017). The family has more people, but only Ty works, so life is even more difficult. At home, taking care of and taking the children to school, Ty's wife also takes the time to make wine to sell to earn more money to cover living expenses.

After finishing his wife's funeral in Quang Tri, when he arrived in Binh Phuoc , Mr. Ty immediately started working as a hired hand to earn money to cover living expenses for his father and son.

It was thought that peace in the small house would pass smoothly when both husband and wife worked hard. However, in recent years, Ms. Nga's health has gradually declined. In 2023, Ms. Nga began to have moles on her feet that caused pain. She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with ankle sprains, so she was given medicine to take at home. The medicine did not help, her feet were so painful that she could not walk, so she had to have a minor surgery. After removing this mole, another mole grew all over her feet. After going to a specialist at the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, which was not feasible, Ms. Nga was referred to the Oncology Hospital with the conclusion that it was skin cancer. After more than 2 years of treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Ms. Nga's health gradually weakened and she could not hold on. She passed away in early April 2025 when the disease had metastasized to her groin and lungs.

During the time he was treating his wife, Mr. Ty could not work regularly and had to borrow money, so life was very difficult. The amount of money he borrowed for treatment was more than 130 million VND. With the wish of his wife and family to return to their hometown for burial, Mr. Ty ran around to get money to take his wife back to her hometown for the funeral.

After 20 days in Quang Tri to take care of his wife's funeral, Mr. Ty was busy returning to Loc Ninh to take care of his two young children. Mr. Ty shared: The two children are still young, I cannot go to work far away now. There is no work in the border area so I don't know how to manage. The children are still young and cannot drop out of school. For now, I will continue to make wine so that my father and I can have vegetables and porridge to eat and conveniently take them to school. I will do whatever people hire me to do, I don't know what to do.

The pain of missing his wife still hasn't subsided, now he has to worry about his children and the mounting debts, making Mr. Ty helpless.

Everything has been settled, however, the difficulties of Mr. Ty and his children are very great, the children are still young, the future is still long, we hope that kind-hearted people will join hands to help so that the children can receive more love when they lose their mother, as well as have funds to continue their studies.
