Some young people, businesses, and household businesses will receive two years of free use of '.vn' domain names and digital services (website, email).
The Ministry of Information and Communications has just issued a Decision approving the "Program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain '.vn' in provinces and cities nationwide in the period 2024-2025."
The program for online presence with the national domain '.vn' will be spearheaded by the Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC, Ministry of Information and Communications). The decision takes effect from May 21, 2024.
Accordingly, businesses established within one year of registering for the domain name, and household businesses with a business registration license, will receive two years of free use of the "biz.vn" domain name and digital services (website, email).
In addition, all Vietnamese citizens aged 18-23 will receive two years of free use of the “id.vn” domain name and digital services (website, email, online CV/blog).

The program aims to raise awareness about online presence on the Internet, promoting the digital economy and digital society. Through the program, individuals, businesses, and individual business owners will be supported in using the Internet to develop themselves, conduct business, establish digital brands, and create an online presence with a “.vn” domain name.
The program helps localities improve their digital economy index within the digital transformation index, developing a sustainable digital economy and digital society from the ground up. At the national level, the program contributes to expanding and strengthening Vietnam's sovereign presence in cyberspace.
At the same time, the program also contributes to increasing the usage rate of the national ".vn" domain and Vietnam's ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII), developing domestic online content and services, and promoting the storage and management of Vietnamese people's data in Vietnam.
The target for the 2024-2025 period is to have at least 400,000 “id.vn” and “biz.vn” domain names, along with digital services (websites, email), registered for use. The Ministry of Information and Communications aims to have at least 1 million “.vn” domain names registered for use by 2025, reaching the top 20-30 in the world.
In Vietnam, the number of national ".vn" domain names currently stands at approximately 610,000. The percentage of businesses registering to use ".vn" domain names is around 25%.
According to the 2023 E-commerce Index (EBI) report, only 44% of Vietnamese businesses currently have websites (including both international and ".vn" domains).
Meanwhile, in 2022, the percentages in India were 31.14% for small businesses and 53.19% for medium-sized businesses. In South Korea, 68% of small businesses and 79.26% of medium-sized businesses had websites. In Indonesia, 30.67% of small businesses and 54.97% of medium-sized businesses owned websites.
