The North is experiencing a widespread heat wave that has lasted for five consecutive days.

From June 17-21, the North will experience widespread heat , with many places experiencing severe heat with the highest temperature of 35-37 degrees Celsius, and some places over 37 degrees Celsius.

The area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen has stronger heat, to especially severe heat with the highest temperature of 36-38 degrees, in some places over 39 degrees.

According to the meteorological agency, during the 5 consecutive hot days in the North, there is a possibility of showers and thunderstorms in some places in the afternoon and evening, especially on the night of June 20 in mountainous areas. From around the night of June 21, the whole region is likely to have widespread thunderstorms, with some areas having moderate to heavy rain.

This rain will help the Northern region end the heat from the afternoon of June 21-23. In the Central region, the heat will continue after June 21; from June 24-26, the heat will remain severe.

Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that based on the data of sea surface temperature observations along the equatorial region in the East and central Pacific , the El Nino phenomenon has officially appeared.

Due to the influence of El Nino, heat waves are likely to increase from June to August, concentrated in the Northern and Central regions. The peak of heat waves in the North is concentrated in June to July; in the Central region, it is from June to August. Heat waves last on average from 3 to 5 days, with some longer periods.

In the second half of June, the average temperature tends to be 0.5-1 degree higher than the average of many years. The Northern and Central regions are likely to experience many hot days, the number of hot days is higher than the average of many years.

Meteorological experts say that this time, heat waves will occur during the day, evening and night. In the North and North Central regions, there is a possibility of thunderstorms with tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
