“Three months ago, we introduced the new Microsoft Bing and Edge with artificial intelligence (AI), a groundbreaking move that will change the way people find information,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president and chief marketing officer at Microsoft. “Our goal is to solve the pervasive problem of traditional web search, where nearly half of all searches go unanswered, wasting billions of searches every day. Our new Bing is designed to give people better search results, more specific answers to their questions, the ability to create and edit content, and a more friendly user experience through natural language chat. Bing incorporates large, powerful language models like Open AI’s GPT-4 chat to provide users with up-to-date, well-cited, conversational results — something no other engine can match.”
According to Microsoft, in the last 90 days, customers have used chat to solve more than half a billion problems, from finding the best travel destinations for people with hay fever to creating a 10-year global volcano map. Microsoft has also created more than 200 million images using the Bing Image Creator tool. With more than 100 million daily users and a four-fold increase in Bing mobile app installs since its launch, Bing has exceeded Microsoft's expectations.
Microsoft’s corporate vice president and chief marketing officer announced that we’re entering the next generation of search with Bing and Edge, powered by AI. By expanding the reach and capabilities of these two applications, we’re transforming search – the largest software category in the world – into a virtual assistant for users on the web.
Microsoft recently integrated Bing Image Creator into Bing chat, making Bing the only search engine that can create text and image content in one place. Microsoft announced that it is expanding Image Creator to all chat modes and over 100 languages in Bing, allowing users to create images in their native language.
Bing has used AI to help users easily find and create what they need in a conversation. Chat is not just a tool for receiving information, but also for taking action. With the integration of Image Builder, users can create the image they want in just a few steps right in the conversation. In the coming weeks, Actions in Bing and Edge will let users do more with fewer steps. For example, if a user wants to watch a movie, Actions in Edge will find and display options in the sidebar, then Edge will play the movie the user wants to watch on an available website or app.
In partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft continues to deploy protections to block harmful content based on what Microsoft has learned in the beta. Microsoft teams are also working to address issues like misinformation, content blocking, and data security. Additionally, Microsoft is working to prevent the spread of harmful or discriminatory content based on our AI principles.
