Microsoft's move comes shortly after the company quietly updated its official support page to provide users with information regarding the end of support for older versions of Windows, such as Windows 7 and 8.1 - both of which end support in January 2023.
Updated website launched by Microsoft to warn Windows 10 users
Microsoft's website now has three tabs: one for Windows 7, one for Windows 8.1, and one for Windows 10. Of these, the Windows 10 tab provides the end of support date and what users can do with these outdated systems: upgrade to Windows 11.
In a statement on the support tab for Windows 10, the site says: "After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend you move to Windows 11."
The page also has several links where users can learn about Windows 11 and its features, compare Windows 10 to its successor, find a guide to buying a new laptop, learn how to transfer data from Windows 10 to Windows 11, and visit the Microsoft Store to browse Windows 11 devices.
Microsoft acknowledges that many users will continue to use Windows 10 (and even grow) despite the end of support, so the company is asking them to at least back up their files in OneDrive.
At the bottom of the page, users will find a FAQ section with additional information, such as trading in an old device, upgrading to Windows 11, choosing the right edition, and more. There is also a section for the Extended Security Program, which will be available to home customers for the first time. However, while Microsoft has revealed pricing details for business customers, information for home users has not been disclosed. The company said it will share details closer to October 2025.
