Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) was officially put into operation on December 22, after 12 years of construction.
To attract people to use the train and get used to this new form of public transport, Ho Chi Minh City has exempted people from traveling by train for 1 month.
Every day, Urban Railway Company No. 1 (HURC1) - the operating unit - organizes 200 train trips, from 5am to 10pm.
According to HURC1 statistics, from December 22 to 29, after 8 days of operation, metro line 1 ran more than 1,562 trips, serving about 908,109 people, an average of more than 113,513 passengers per day.
The operator recorded a continuous peak in the number of visitors. Specifically, on the first day of operation (December 22), there were nearly 150,000 visitors. On Saturday and Sunday (December 28-29), the total number of visitors was approximately 175,000 and nearly 201,000 people.
HURC1 said the reason for the sudden increase was that on the first weekends after the metro went into operation, a large number of people wanted to experience it and take advantage of their break time.
However, according to records, on normal weekdays, the number of people starting to use the metro as a means of transportation to go to work, school, sightseeing, etc. is also increasing.
Strengthening control of entry and exit of metro line 1 from January 2, 2025
According to the announcement from HURC1, from January 2 to 9, 2025, the access control system will be put into operation. Passengers are recommended to download the HCMC Metro HURC application to create a QR code when taking the train.
If customers have a Mastercard, they can bring it along to experience the Metro Line 1 service for free without having to register to create a card and scan the card at the entrance and exit gates with readers. Customers who do not have a Mastercard are supported to open a card directly at the stations with the condition that they must bring their Citizen ID, Chip ID or VNEID application to complete the procedure.
From January 10, 2025, customers can use Visa, JCB, American Express, Union Pay, and Napas cards to scan at entrances and exits equipped with readers.
From January 20, 2025, customers can use chip-embedded Citizen Identification cards and ID cards to scan cards at entrance and exit gates equipped with readers.
For children (under 14 years old) and other subjects, station staff will support and provide specific instructions to help passengers easily use the service when traveling by train.
To facilitate all passengers in the initial phase of free operation, HURC1 will arrange staff and collaborators at stations to provide maximum support and ensure passengers have an easy and quick service experience.
