Meta said on December 11 that it had donated $1 million to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration fund, the latest move by the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to foster a positive relationship with Trump.
Meta did not provide details about the reason for making this donation.

During last month’s meeting, Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump reportedly exchanged pleasantries, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his election victory. The Meta boss also dined with Mr. Trump’s pick for secretary of state, Marco Rubio, according to a person familiar with the meeting.
A Meta spokesperson said at the time that Mr Zuckerberg was “grateful for the invitation to have dinner with President Trump”.
Mr. Zuckerberg is one of several tech executives who have sought to build direct relationships with Mr. Trump. Even before last month’s election, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai began reaching out to Mr. Trump.
Mr Trump has previously had a strained relationship with Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
After the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Meta blocked Mr. Trump from its platforms. After a while, his accounts were restored.
Mr Trump has also criticized Mr Zuckerberg personally, saying the chief executive should be jailed for “conspiring against” him in the 2020 election.
But over the summer, Mr. Zuckerberg had at least two private phone calls with Mr. Trump. In one call, Mr. Zuckerberg wished Mr. Trump well and said he was “praying” for him. That call came just after a failed assassination attempt on Mr. Trump at a campaign event in Butler, Penn.
In a letter to Congress in August, Mr. Zuckerberg publicly expressed regret for some of his past political activities. He said that in 2021, Meta was “pressured” to censor more COVID-19 content. He added that he would not repeat the donations he made in 2020 to support election efforts because the gifts made him appear less than “neutral.”
