Mr. David Chen - vehicle security consultant at the Singapore International Transport Institute shared that public charging stations are vulnerable to criminals because users are often off guard.
It is important to raise awareness of self-protection, from choosing a safe location to using equipment properly.
In particular, when stopping, parking and charging electric vehicles at public places, users need to pay attention to some safety tips to avoid risks and protect property.
Choose a reputable charging location with surveillance cameras
Not all charging stations meet electrical safety and security standards. Prioritize locations with good lighting, security cameras, and operated by reputable brands.
Check the charging station before plugging in
Before charging, check the connection port for damage or burning. Make sure the charging cord is not cracked or torn in the rubber. If there are any unusual signs, do not use it and report to the management unit.
Always lock your car when you leave.
Even if you’re only going away for a few minutes, it’s a good idea to lock your bike securely. Some modern electric bikes have automatic locking features or send alerts if the bike is unlocked – turn these on for added security.
Do not leave personal items in the car
Electric cars usually have large, transparent glass. When parked in public, do not leave laptops, wallets or handbags on the front seat. This will reduce the risk of theft.
Comply with the specified charging time
Some public charging points have time limits. Not only is taking up a spot for too long an inconvenience to others, but you could also get fined or get a bad review if you use a booking app.
Always observe your surroundings When plugging or unplugging the charger, don't get so caught up in the action that you forget to observe your surroundings. Especially at night, avoid deserted or poorly lit areas.
