The mother-in-law brought a huge black plastic bag to the bed, opened it and saw what was inside, making her son-in-law kneel down.

It's too late to regret.

“People often say that few generations of rice cakes have bones, and few generations of stepmothers love their stepchildren. But my wife’s family is different. I see that even though my mother-in-law is a stepmother, she loves her daughter very much and works hard to send her to school in the big city.

She is beautiful and understanding. I am also a director at a large company, 10 years older than her, a member of the 8X generation. Later, when we got married and had children, because I didn't want strangers to come into the house, I asked my mother-in-law to come live with me, so she could take care of the children, and I also gave her some money every month," Mr. Tan (35 years old, in Shanghai, China) began his thoughts on his personal Weibo.

The couple asked their mother-in-law to come from the countryside to live with them to help take care of the child, and still paid them a monthly salary. Illustrative photo.

However, things did not seem as peaceful as Anh Tan had predicted.

Mrs. Luu (45 years old) - mother of Mr. Ha Linh's wife (25 years old) has always been used to the rural lifestyle, does not know how to use many smart appliances in the house, cooks salty food, and sometimes cares too much, making Mr. Tan not very satisfied.

Especially in the matter of taking care of her children. Although she did not express her attitude clearly, Mrs. Liu could feel the distance between her children and her. However, because she loved her grandchildren, Mrs. Liu stayed.

“I want to raise my child scientifically and modernly, but she is, to be honest, very rustic. My child is 2 years old this year, so I am also planning to discuss with my wife about letting me go back to the countryside and take my child to school,” Mr. Tan added.

The climax was one day, Mrs. Luu took her grandchild for a walk but unfortunately lost her. When the family went to look for her, luckily a neighbor found her alone in the playground and brought her home. “However, what made me wonder was that my mother-in-law said she took her grandchild to the market, we searched the market for more than 2 hours, extracted the camera but found nothing. So what really happened to her?

I was really worried, luckily this time someone I knew recognized me otherwise I wouldn't know where my child was now. Taking this as an excuse, I told my wife right away. After some hesitation, she agreed.

Seeing her family like that, thinking about her own illness, Mrs. Lu agreed to return to her hometown. Illustration photo.

So just two days later, my wife and I sat down to talk to my mother. We also tactfully said that the baby was now old enough to go to school, and seeing that my mother was having a hard time here, we wanted her to return to her hometown to enjoy her old age. My mother seemed to realize something, and she must have felt guilty for losing her grandchild, so she agreed.

"We planned to stay for 3 more days, so that at the weekend when my wife and I had a day off, we could take her back to her hometown with our children," Mr. Tan recalled.

However, in the next 3 days, both he and his wife realized that their mother-in-law was very sad. Until one night, when Mr. Tan and his wife were in the bedroom. It was about 10pm, when they were about to go to bed, they heard a knock on the door. "Mom, can you come in?" Mrs. Luu said. Hearing that, they immediately called their mother in. Before they could get out of bed, the couple began to feel confused when they saw their mother holding a black plastic bag and telling them to open it.

“I was surprised to see that inside was a lot of money, both large and small, wrapped in different rolls of paper. There was also a toy truck. My mother added that this was all the money that my wife and I had been sending her every month for over a year. Apart from the money to buy gifts and cakes for the grandchild, my mother-in-law still kept it, this time she gave it back to my husband and I because 'I came to take care of the grandchild because of affection, not money'.

My mother also saved money to buy my son a toy car that he liked and added: 'Don't be too strict with your son, he is still young, let him experience whatever he wants like other children. He is allergic to shrimp, likes to eat meat and vegetables cut into small pieces and has to watch Doraemon to eat a lot', Mr. Tan recounted.

Hearing his mother-in-law say this, Mr. Tan realized how wrong he was for always thinking bad things about his mother. There were even things she said about his grandchild that he, as a father, did not know.

“I still remember that moment, I even knelt down, hugged my mother and told her to stay with us. My wife cried. However, she was still determined to go home. She also refused to accept the money. That was truly a costly lesson for my wife and I,” Mr. Tan shared.

It has been 2 months since his mother-in-law returned to her hometown. Although she still calls him every day to check on him, he, his wife and son all feel the absence and sadness. He hopes that sharing his own family story on social media will somehow give people a different perspective on “stepmothers and stepchildren” or on mothers from the countryside coming to take care of their grandchildren.

“As a grandmother or mother, everyone loves their children and grandchildren. As children and grandchildren, we should also understand and love our grandparents and parents more. Don't make them sad,” Mr. Tan added.
