"The PSG board was informed on July 15, 2022, of my decision not to renew my contract beyond 2024, and the letter was sent solely to confirm what I had told them. There was never any discussion about any extension," Mbappe's statement to AFP, published on the afternoon of June 13 (Vietnam time), read.
Mbappe announces he will not renew his contract with PSG.
Previously, L'Équipe reported: "PSG's management was surprised to receive a letter from Mbappe (dated June 12) announcing their decision not to activate the extension clause (for another season until June 2025). They believe the letter was unnecessary and lacked legal basis. Before August 1st, Mbappe didn't need to notify PSG; the contract wouldn't have been automatically extended anyway (it expires in June 2024). Instead, PSG wanted to discuss a new contract, and if they didn't agree, Mbappe would be placed on the transfer list."
The subsequent developments in the case, with Mbappe's statement to AFP, almost certainly led to the conclusion that the 24-year-old French star had decided to leave PSG this summer. This decision contradicts what Mbappe had recently said: "I will stay at PSG and play next season."
PSG certainly wouldn't want to lose Mbappe for free if they agreed to let him play out the remainder of his contract, because from the beginning of 2024, the star will be free to negotiate with other clubs and leave when the season ends.
Mbappe is about to follow Messi's lead and leave PSG.
According to ESPN journalist Julien Laurens: "PSG are ready to listen to offers for Mbappe and are willing to sell the star for around €150 million." Currently, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Manchester United are among the clubs vying to sign Mbappe.
