United Flight 35 later landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport at 1:30 p.m. on March 7 (1:30 a.m. March 8 Vietnam time), according to the US Federal Aviation Administration.
According to San Francisco International Airport, the flight lost part of its landing gear tire during takeoff at around 2 a.m. on March 8 (Vietnam time). Video on YouTube channel Cali Planes shows the tire falling off seconds after takeoff.
Pieces of the tire landed in the airport's employee parking lot. The airport said no one was injured in the incident and that it had closed the runway for a short time to clear the debris.
Video from the scene showed at least one car in the parking lot was damaged after the incident.

"We are grateful to the pilots and flight attendants for their professional handling of this situation," United said. "We would also like to thank the ground crews who had a tow truck on standby to move the aircraft immediately after landing, as well as the airport teams who assisted customers upon arrival."
United said it will work with owners of damaged cars at San Francisco International Airport "to ensure their needs are addressed."
According to United, the fallen tire was among 12 on the Boeing 777-200's two main landing struts.
"The aircraft is designed to land safely in the event of a tire failure or failure," United said.
The FAA said it will investigate the incident.
United said there were 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots on board at the time of the incident. The airline arranged for another plane to complete the trip.
