SAF fuel is produced from renewable and sustainably sourced raw materials such as used cooking oil, agricultural by-products, wood biomass, municipal waste….

Using sustainable aviation fuel SAF can help cut carbon emissions by 80% compared to traditional fuels, meet strict international aviation standards, and be safe for use in commercial operations.

Attending the event to witness the successful organization of the first international flight using SAF sustainable aviation fuel in Vietnam between Vietjet and Petrolimex Aviation, Mr. Dinh Viet Thang - Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, said that this is a source of pride and an important milestone not only for the two businesses but also for the entire Vietnamese aviation industry. At the same time, it affirms that Vietnam is a responsible member of international aviation.

Petrolimex Aviation representative said that they will continue to research, develop and supply SAF products regularly and long-term, joining hands to contribute to greening the aviation industry.

Mr. Dinh Viet Phuong - General Director of Vietjet said that he is cooperating with prestigious international partners to conduct research, development, supply and use of SAF, following the goal of reducing net emissions to 0 (Net Zero) by 2050 as committed by Vietnam at COP26.

In addition to the first test flights, SAF production costs will continue to decrease, contributing to ensuring SAF fuel on commercial flights.

Previously, Vietnam Airlines also successfully operated a flight using SAF fuel with the number VN660, from Singapore to Hanoi. However, this fueling was done internationally.

Many airlines in the world use green fuel

According to aviation businesses, many airlines in the world have flown clean fuel, Vietnam cannot be left out of the trend despite the high cost. Late last year, the British airline Virgin Atlantic successfully carried out the world's first flight using 100% SAF.

In 2024, AirFrance (France) will use 50% of its fuel blending fossil fuels with SAF for its airlines. In Southeast Asia, Singapore has used SAF since 2017 and is continuing to apply it strongly.

Mr. Kelvin Lee, Deputy Director of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said that 320 airlines belonging to IATA, accounting for 83% of global air traffic, are all aiming to reduce emissions to zero. In Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines, VietJet and Bamboo Airlines are also pursuing this goal.
