Thai tennis has been making many outstanding marks in early 2025. Most recently, the mark named Maximus Jones created a miracle for the region.
The 20-year-old tennis player of Thai-Australian descent has just won the Cote d'Ivoire Open 2025 (ATP Challenger Tour) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
In this tournament, the world No. 618 player excellently overcame a series of strong opponents, including the No. 5 seed and former world top 50 Ricardas Berankis in the final match that lasted more than 2 hours, to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

This helped Maximus write a new page in history for the tennis of the "Land of the Golden Pagoda" when he won the championship after starting from the qualifying round, and re-established history when the last person from Thailand to win this level was Danai Udomchoke, in 2012. The last person from Southeast Asia to achieve this achievement was Ly Hoang Nam in 2022 in Thailand.
In addition, this ATP Challenger title is the first championship in his career, helping Maximus become the youngest Thai male tennis player to ever win this tournament, breaking the record of Thai legend Paradorn Srichaphan, and ending Thailand's more than decade-long Challenger title drought.
The win will see Maximus jump 182 places to 436th in the ATP rankings, putting him on par with compatriot Kasidit Samrej, who played in the Australian Open main draw earlier this year and upset Daniil Medvedev.
This duo is expected to create a "double sword" performance to help Thailand win gold at the 33rd SEA Games, on home soil at the end of the year.
With an impressive wave of rejuvenation, Thai tennis is poised to explode to dominate the regional scene by the end of the year.
