After a difficult period due to the US embargo, Huawei has shown signs of recovery and is gradually regaining its position in the Chinese market.
Now, not only is Huawei a manufacturer of technology devices, it also introduces its own operating system. Huawei has officially stopped using Android to switch to "HarmonyOS Next".
HarmonyOS Next is Huawei's first operating system built independently of Android. It will initially run on current and future Huawei devices in China, with an international version coming soon. Huawei says HarmonyOS Next can run on a wide range of devices, from smartphones to wearables, smart home devices, and car cockpits.
By September 2024, statistics reports show that more than 10,000 apps are ready to be converted for HarmonyOS Next.
However, the two upcoming products, Mate 70 and Mate X6, will not be equipped with HarmonyOS Next and will still run the existing HarmonyOS 4.3 based on Android. However, updates to the new Android version will not be available in the future. Huawei has not yet revealed the specific reason for the above decision.
Huawei's consumer business chief Richard Yu said users need not worry as these devices can run on the new operating system. As the device will give users the choice between HarmonyOS 4.3, which maintains compatibility with Android, or the new HarmonyOS Next 5.0.
With the exception of the Mate 70 and Mate X6, Huawei's future devices will run HarmonyOS Next, starting at least in 2025. This will be the last launch we see of Huawei introducing Android-powered devices.
