US law enforcement said a gunman fired multiple shots from an “elevated position” outside a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump on the evening of July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, before being killed by Secret Service agents. “During the former President Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, at approximately 6:15 p.m. on July 13, a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the campaign rally venue,” the statement continued. “Secret Service agents neutralized the shooter, who is deceased.” Anthony Guglielmi, director of communications for the Secret Service, stressed in the statement: “ The Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and former President Trump is safe. One audience member was killed and two were seriously injured. The incident is under investigation and the Secret Service has notified the FBI.” Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick, who was sitting in the front row at Donald Trump’s rally, said he saw “an attack on the former president” and that a person behind him appeared to be seriously injured. McCormick told CNN on air that Trump had just invited him onto the stage when, about a minute later, he heard a series of gunshots — about seven or eight. “All of a sudden, it was chaos. The Secret Service immediately covered the former president, jumped on him, and the crowd immediately fell to the ground,” McCormick said.Law enforcement officers at Donald Trump's campaign rally after a shooting on July 13, 2024. The Senate candidate said he looked over his shoulder and “it was clear someone had been shot.” People around the person tried to provide first aid as it took several minutes for medical personnel to reach them because of the crowd. McCormick noted that he and all of the approximately 15,000 people in the crowd were screened with metal detectors before entering the rally. “All we know is there was a gunshot and then I jumped over the fence and put my hand over the head of this person who was bleeding profusely,” said campaign speaker Rico Elmore. The injured person was “just a stranger” that Elmore did not know. He himself was not harmed. CNN, citing US law enforcement officials, said the shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Fox News reported that Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) issued a joint statement following the assassination. “As announced tonight, President Trump is doing well and is grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their swift action,” the joint statement said. “President Trump looks forward to joining all of you in Milwaukee as we convene to nominate him as the 47th President of the United States. As our party’s nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision of Making America Great Again.” Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden called the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally “sickening,” stressing that “there is no place for this kind of violence in America.”Laodong.vn
