Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on December 16 officially announced a Joint Statement on upgrading Malaysia-Japan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The statement was made before the two leaders witnessed the signing ceremony and Exchange of Notes on the implementation of Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA) to provide control and surveillance equipment to Malaysia.

On December 15, the official announcement of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's working visit to Japan took place on the occasion of attending the Summit to celebrate 50 years of ASEAN-Japan relations from December 16-18.

At the OSA signing ceremony, the Malaysian side was represented by Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan, while the Japanese side was represented by his counterpart Yoko Kamikaway.

The two Prime Ministers also witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding on Space Development and Applications between the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The two leaders had a bilateral meeting earlier.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that Malaysia appreciates Japan's commitment to Southeast Asia, as since the 1980s the country has contributed to the growth of the region in general and Malaysia in particular through private sector investment.

For his part, Prime Minister Kishida highlighted Malaysia's role in shaping today's ASEAN, as well as expressing his wish that Japan would engage more in cooperation with the regional bloc.

In the second memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the space sector, Malaysia is represented by MySA Director General Azlikamil Napiah and JAXA by President Hiroshi Yamakawa.
