In the opening match, Malaysia chose Sultan Ibrahim Stadium as their home stadium, with a capacity of about 40,000 spectators. However, in the next match against Vietnam, they will move to Bukit Jalil Stadium - the National Stadium with a capacity of more than 80,000 seats.
This is considered a strategic decision by the Malaysian Football Federation, aiming to create maximum pressure on the away team in a match that is crucial to the ticket to the next round of the 2027 Asian Cup.
“We want to turn Bukit Jalil into a symbol of national strength and unity,” CEO Rob Friend told the New Straits Times . “This is not just a match, but an opportunity for the whole country to stand behind the team.”
On social media platforms, the Malaysian team also launched a campaign to “cover the stands in black and yellow,” the traditional colors of the team. The notorious “fire pan” of Southeast Asia promises to bring many difficulties to the Vietnamese team.
Bukit Jalil was the place where Vietnam spent an unforgettable night in the first leg of the 2018 AFF Cup final. At that time, amid the endless cheers of 88,000 spectators, Vietnam led 2-0 but then had to leave the field with a 2-2 draw.
On March 25, naturalized duo Hector Herve and La'Vere Corbin-Ong shined as Malaysia won 2-0 against Nepal. Malaysia tied with Vietnam on points but had a lower goal difference as the "Golden Star Warriors" beat Laos 5-0.
