Malaysia plans to spend about $425 million to build a new port using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve operational efficiency in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. This will be the first port in Malaysia to apply AI technology.

Earlier this June, local property developer Tanco Holdings, through its subsidiary Midports Holdings, signed a memorandum of understanding on port construction with marine engineering firm CCCC Dredging Co., a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Group.

According to the plan, the new port will be built on an area of about 809,300 square meters in Port Dickson city, Negeri Sembilan state.

With its proximity to Kuala Lumpur and the midpoint of the Straits of Malacca, the port will benefit from high traffic volumes and connectivity to key industrial areas in Malaysia. It will feature a 1.8km-long wharf, terminal and container handling area.

AI technology is expected to improve port operations efficiency, reduce human error and reduce accident rates. AI systems will analyze traffic data, schedule ship movements, monitor maritime activities around the port and automate logistics management.

These advances are expected to streamline processes, reduce operating costs and minimize environmental impact. The port will also feature automated cranes, self-driving trucks and state-of-the-art cybersecurity measures, with the ability to handle large container ships.

Tanco Group CEO Andrew Tan Juan Suan said the construction of the port will contribute to Malaysia's goal of establishing a modern and efficient port hub, boosting economic development in Negeri Sembilan and strengthening the country's global trade position.

According to Mr. Andrew, the partnership with CCCC Dredging Co. marks an important step towards realizing the company’s vision of a world-class port in Port Dickson. CCCC Dredging Co.’s expertise and resources will ensure the successful implementation of the project, which will boost economic growth and create job opportunities in the region.

Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun said the new port could significantly boost Malaysia's logistics and shipping industry thanks to a network of roads and highways connecting the port to major industrial zones.

As global companies diversify their supply chains, Malaysia has emerged as a beneficiary, attracting investment from electronics and other manufacturers. Malaysia’s largest port, Port Klang, is also planning to double its capacity to meet demand.
