"Mai Vang Tri An" gives gifts to 2 artists in Quang Tri

On the afternoon of March 18, the " Mai Vang Tri An " program organized by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper with the support of Nam A Commercial Joint Stock Bank visited and presented gifts to People's Artist Xuan Dam (91 years old; residing in Ward 5, Dong Ha City) and photographer Ho Sy So (83 years old; residing in Vinh Giang Commune, Vinh Linh District).

These are two veteran artists who have made many contributions to Vietnamese cultural and artistic activities in general and Quang Tri province in particular.

People's Artist Xuan Dam is one of the great names of Vietnam's contemporary theater. Since the 1970s, he has participated in cultural and artistic management, serving as Director of the Department of Culture and Information, Chairman of the Quang Tri Literature and Arts Association, and for many years a member of the Secretariat of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association.

People's Artist Xuan Dam has contributed to the Vietnamese stage arts with over 50 plays, including famous works such as: "Gia dinh ma bay", "Con ga chan chi", "Tin hieu trai tim", "Tieng hat", "Bao to oai khoi", "Tinh ca", "Huyen thuy me"... These works have left many emotions in the hearts of the public nationwide. In 1997, director Xuan Dam was awarded the title of People's Artist by the state.

Meanwhile, photographer Ho Sy So was a war correspondent, active during almost all the years the country was divided into two parts, North and South. He was dubbed by the media as "The DMZ historian with a lens" and was the author of many valuable documentary photos, especially those of Ben Hai River and Hien Luong Bridge during the fiery summer years in Quang Tri.

Photographer Ho Sy So is famous for his works "Panorama of Hien Luong River" or "Sending Heart to the South". He is holding about 3,000 films, of which nearly 2,000 are about the DMZ.

He also witnessed and recorded many important milestones of Quang Tri during the war. He preserved the war films by wrapping them in dried banana leaves.

In 2013, photographer Ho Sy So released a photo book: "Fidel Castro - Quang Tri, a historic day in 1973" with 73 pages, a collection of 51 typical black and white photos, selected from 250 moments of leader Fidel Castro visiting Quang Tri landmarks. The photo book won the C Prize "Sy So Quang Tri - Homeland" - Award of the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists - 2003.

For his contributions, photographer Ho Sy So was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2022 by the President with a group of works including: Photo series Fidel Castro - Quang Tri on a historic day, 1973 and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam (1960 - 1975); received the prize of the Competition for Composing High-Quality Literary and Artistic Works reflecting the theme of revolution and resistance in the period 1930 - 1975 awarded by the National Committee of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Recognizing the contributions of People's Artist Xuan Dam and Photographer Ho Sy So, on behalf of the "Mai Vang Tri An" Program, Mr. To Dinh Tuan - Editor-in-Chief of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper - sent his regards, encouragement and awarded certificates and financial support to the two artists, each with 10 million VND.

"The tradition of the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper has been the Mai Vang Award for 29 consecutive years. In the past four years, the newspaper has added the "Mai Vang Tri An" program with the sponsorship of Nam A Commercial Joint Stock Bank to visit and give gifts to many artists across the country who have contributed to the arts. It is known that People's Artist Xuan Dam has devoted his whole life to devoting his talent to activities to preserve and conserve the performing arts; and photographer Ho Sy So is very famous for having many rare photos preserving historical moments during the war years that are very valuable" - Editor-in-Chief of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper acknowledged.

Mr. To Dinh Tuan sent his regards and best wishes to People's Artist Xuan Dam and photographer Ho Sy So, and expressed his hope that with their valuable experiences throughout their years of artistic activities, the two veteran artists would continue to contribute and pass on their knowledge to future generations to learn from.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Tri province, sent his sincere thanks to the program "Mai Vang Tri An" of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper .

"I am very touched that despite the distance, the program still personally visited and presented gifts to two artists who have made many contributions to the artistic activities of Vietnam in general and Quang Tri in particular. On behalf of the Department's leadership, I would like to thank you very much. I hope that the program will continue to accompany artists nationwide to help artists and artisans reduce difficulties and this will be a great source of spiritual encouragement for artists to overcome adversity to devote themselves to art" - Mr. Hung emphasized.
