Shocked and worried about facial scars while playing Wu Song
- How do you feel when the film project 'Southern Forest Land' is officially released after a long wait?
I was surprised, overwhelmed and moved. Since I had not watched the film from the beginning, I quietly watched everyone's reactions throughout the screening. Luckily, most of the comments were positive.
From the beginning, when director Nguyen Quang Dung invited me to play the role of Vo Tong, he said it was just a guest role. My character therefore only appeared in 3 segments in the film. If I had been invited to play a role with more screen time, I might not have had the opportunity to appear in this film. Everything, after all, is "fate".
Mai Tai Phen with the role of Vo Tong in "Southern Forest Land".
- The character Vo Tong is classic and familiar in old works, so it is understandable that Mai Tai Phen received negative reactions from the audience. How do you receive compliments and criticisms?
I don’t blame the audience because everyone has their own thoughts. When they only look at the poster and the character’s appearance, they can’t guess what Mai Tai Phen will do in the movie. I hope everyone will go to the theater to see it and get a clearer picture of the character.
I was also an audience member and really loved the role of Le Quang (who played Vo Tong in the TV series). My scholarly appearance was something that everyone assumed and saw in me. For an actor, transforming into a character is a very normal thing. I just felt that this role suited me and thought I could do it. Fitting the role is the factor that helps me excel in acting.
- During filming, you injured your face and left a pretty clear scar. Are you worried that this will affect your future work?
When I first got injured, I was so shocked that I felt like I couldn’t continue. There were hundreds of people involved in the shoot, and every second and minute was costing money, so there was no way I could stop. I put everything aside and continued to finish the scene.
The scar on my face was worrying because I couldn’t play handsome roles or do commercials. However, everything is no longer a fear. I consider it a memory in my career. Every time I look at it, I think it was thanks to it that I got the role of Vo Tong in the movie Dat rung phuong Nam . Anh Dung also teased me that I originally intended to wear fake makeup but unexpectedly I had a real scar.
Mai Tai Phen has been quiet for 3 years. The actor is planning an action film project.
- For the past 3 years, Mai Tai Phen has been very quiet. Why is that?
3 years is the time I spent training and improving myself in both professional skills and life experience. I actively wrote action movie scripts, conceived my brainchild. I aspire to create my own series of movies and develop it long-term.
When I first became famous, I took on many projects, big and small, to test my abilities. But at some point, I needed to calm down. I needed to be serious about my own direction, I couldn't just fly around aimlessly anymore.
Not thinking about getting married even though parents remind me
- You are so secretive that the press and media do not know how to contact you. For an artist in his prime, is it necessary to be so quiet?
From 2019 until now, there have been more than 10 movie offers but I have refused all of them. It's not that I'm arrogant, the simple reason is that I don't think the role is right for me.
I accept to give opportunities to others and find new directions myself. That does not mean I am going backwards or standing still, but just going slowly. This job is sometimes like that, you have to take it slow to get results.
In my career, I really admire Ly Hai. To achieve the success he has now, he has gone through hardships and walked on rocks. I want to be as lucky as him in the future. Of course, it will not be easy, it will take a lot of time, dedication and effort.
- When do you plan to get married?
My parents in the countryside still remind and urge me from time to time. As for me, I feel so passionate and enthusiastic about my job right now that I haven't thought about it yet.
I think in modern society all procedures are just formalities. The wedding ceremony is simply to inform everyone around. As for individuals, as long as two people live together, they are happy and content.
- When many people are interested in your private life, what pressure do you face?
I don't care what the public thinks. I just focus on my profession, how I have to contribute to serve the audience. Because after all, I have not done anything wrong or broken the law to affect anyone.
In the past, if I read negative comments, I would be very sad and depressed, but now I think it's normal. The audience has the right to give their opinions, praise or criticism, or even gossip. People only speak when they care and appreciate me, it's that simple. I'm never sad or angry when people are curious about me.
Mai Tai Phen learned many things from My Tam in work and life.
- What advice does My Tam give you at work?
We still share some work when we meet occasionally. Tam and I both respect each other's thoughts and personal direction.
I was lucky to work with Ms. Tam from the very beginning, so I learned a lot. She is meticulous, disciplined, and very kind to the crew. When on set, Ms. Tam is professional, so everyone worked very comfortably together.
Until now, many people still text me asking when part 2 of His Assistant will be filmed because they are looking forward to going back to work. It is her talent and attitude towards work that I learn from.
"Ms. Tam and I both respect each other's thoughts and personal orientation."
- With the upcoming project, do you plan to invite My Tam to participate?
I think this invitation is very difficult, perhaps it depends on fate. Before, there were many invitations to attend events, participate in this or that project but Ms. Tam often refused. She only attended the premiere of Rom or recently Dat Rung Phuong Nam to support the director and the close crew. That's her personality, she only accepts when she likes it and participates to encourage the person she loves.
