In 2024, Mai Son district was severely affected by hail, heavy rain, whirlwinds and storms No. 2 and 3, causing flash floods and landslides, killing 7 people, injuring 1 person, and damaging 348 houses, of which 15 houses collapsed completely. 168 houses were in the risk area and had to be urgently evacuated in the communes of Chieng Chung, Chieng Noi, Chieng Ve, Na Bo, Phieng Pan, Muong Bon, and Muong Chanh. More than 640 hectares of rice and vegetables were damaged, more than 56 hectares of fish ponds were swept away, and 3,779 livestock and poultry died. 8 schools were flooded, many roads were seriously eroded, and infrastructure and irrigation works were destroyed. The total damage amounted to more than 35 billion VND. In addition, subsidence in Nong Son village, Chieng Sung commune and Mon village, Co Noi commune, also affects people's lives.

Drawing on experience in responding to natural disasters, from the beginning of the year, Mai Son district has directed communes and towns to inspect the quality of irrigation works, traffic works, schools and medical facilities for repair; strengthen the Command Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention - Search and Rescue (PCTT-TKCN) at all levels, develop response plans and identify high-risk areas such as flash floods, landslides, floods and streamside areas. Communes and towns proactively prevent and combat storms and floods, mobilizing resources according to the motto "4 on-site" and "3 ready" to respond and overcome consequences.

In Chieng Noi commune, in 2024, natural disasters caused serious damage to people and property. After the natural disaster, the commune urgently coordinated with functional agencies to restore and construct affected works and projects. Up to now, the commune People's Committee headquarters, cultural houses in Bang Ban and Nhung Duoi villages, commune health stations, rural electricity, stream embankments and domestic water works have been built in Nhung Duoi, Bang Ban, Sai Khao and Pa Hoc villages.

Mr. Cam Van Truc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Noi Commune, said: The commune has completed the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control, increased propaganda, instructed people to tie down their houses, prevent whirlwinds and tornadoes, and checked areas at risk of landslides to evacuate people to safety. At the same time, mobilized machinery and materials from people in villages along the road to be on duty, promptly handle landslides, and ensure traffic safety in the upcoming rainy and flood season.

In 2024, Muong Chanh commune also suffered heavy damage due to storms No. 2 and No. 3. After the flood, the district invested nearly 12 billion VND to build and repair 9 works, of which people contributed more than 322 million VND. Learning from the experience of the previous year, the response to natural disasters has been focused on by the Party Committee and the commune government. Mr. Lo Van Liem, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: The commune has directed the villages to establish a working group to propagate and mobilize households in dangerous areas to move to safe places before the flood season. Vulnerable areas such as spillways and weak bridges continue to mobilize people to contribute labor and materials for repair, ensuring safety. At the same time, it is ready to mobilize resources for flood prevention, search and rescue according to the motto "4 on-site".

The embankment of Suoi Nhung village, Chieng Noi commune, Mai Son district was solidly built.

Ms. Cam Thi Khay, Vice Chairwoman of Mai Son District People's Committee, said: The district has established a shock force, mainly composed of youth union members and militia, ready to respond when situations arise. At the same time, training and drills on natural disaster prevention and control have been strengthened, rescue capacity has been enhanced, warning of dangerous areas during floods and storms has been enhanced, and plans have been developed to evacuate households in areas at risk of landslides and flash floods. The District Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control has reviewed and supplemented rescue equipment at agencies, units, communes, and towns. To date, nearly 1,000 buoys, 800 life jackets, 24 tents, 10 water pumps, 5 generators, and many tools for flood prevention and control have been invested.

By focusing on investing in flood prevention infrastructure, improving forecasting and warning capacity, as well as promoting propaganda and actively proposing specific solutions in disaster prevention and control, Mai Son district will respond promptly and effectively to this year's flood season.
