The touching story of 11-year-old Hoang Xuan Phuoc, an orphan who had to study and sell lottery tickets to help his grandmother who was affected by Agent Orange, made everyone feel sorry. Despite his poverty, Phuoc always tried hard to study, dreaming of becoming a doctor to treat his grandmother and help people in difficult circumstances like himself.
Appearing in episode 128 of the program Vietnamese Family Home , MC Dai Nghia, along with King Tuan Ngoc and Runner-up Quynh Anh, were moved by the difficulties that the children in the program had gone through. Among them, the situation of Hoang Xuan Phuoc (2014), a 5th grade student at Loc An Primary School, Dat Do District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, moved many people.
Since childhood, Xuan Phuoc has not had a complete family because his mother was infected with Agent Orange, had heart disease and was mentally disabled. Since childhood, he did not know who his father was. In 2019, his mother also became seriously ill and passed away. Currently, he is living with his grandmother, uncle and aunt. Talking about his mother, Xuan Phuoc cried and said: “In my eyes, my mother is a wonderful mother. Although she is not normal, she always loves and takes care of me. When I see my friends having parents, I really want to be like them. If my parents were still alive, my grandmother would not have to suffer selling lottery tickets . ”
Phuoc’s maternal grandmother, Nguyen Thi Hong (born 1958), makes a living by selling lottery tickets to earn money to support her children and grandchildren. Phuoc’s uncle was also exposed to Agent Orange, and is in poor health and not mentally alert. His aunt and her children came to live with them. The aunt works as a factory worker and doesn’t earn much. All living expenses for the whole family depend on the two women.
Mrs. Hong has had a heart condition for more than 10 years. Despite her poor health, she still tries to walk from one commune to another to sell lottery tickets. Feeling sorry for her, Phuoc takes advantage of the days when he doesn’t have school to get lottery tickets to sell. There are days when the two of them go out to sell until 11pm. The unstable income also helps to pay for Mrs. Hong’s medicine with an additional 2 million VND per month.
Every time he missed his mother, Phuoc would sit in a corner and secretly cry alone so that she wouldn’t see him. He also wished he could eat delicious food like his friends instead of eating cold rice every morning. However, he was a sensible child so he often consoled himself, “having rice to eat is already a blessing.”
Xuan Phuoc also always tries to study hard to make his grandmother feel secure. His joy every day is going to school. “I really like going to school because I get to play with my friends and learn a lot of interesting knowledge. I want to study really well to grow up to become a doctor. When I do, I will treat my grandmother and everyone else. I love my grandmother, I will try to study hard to not let her down,” Xuan Phuoc said.
MC Dai Nghia choked up when listening to Xuan Phuoc's sharing, he was too young but had to work hard to make a living for his grandmother. The male MC was also worried about Mrs. Hong's health because she was nearly 70 years old, had heart disease but still worked hard every day to earn money from lottery tickets.
One thing that Dai Nghia admires is Xuan Phuoc’s spirit of overcoming difficulties and not giving up. He is only 11 years old but he has to earn money, cook for himself when his grandmother is away and take care of his sick uncle, something that many children of the same age cannot do. However, due to lack of food and clothing, Xuan Phuoc weighs only 24kg even though he is in 5th grade.
Runner-up Quynh Anh could not hold back her tears when seeing Mrs. Hong, an elderly woman, but still having to work hard to make a living to take care of her children and grandchildren. She said that at her age, she should be resting and being taken care of, but she still tries hard to earn money to take care of her small family. Mrs. Hong's strength and boundless love made Quynh Anh feel admiration.
As for King Tuan Ngoc, he was also moved when looking at the house where the grandmother and grandchild were living, it was old and dilapidated, but this was the only place for the grandmother and grandchild Xuan Phuoc to avoid the rain and wind. Similar to Quynh Anh, Tuan Ngoc also admired the sacrifice and hard work of Mrs. Hong when she stopped worrying about her children and then worried about her grandchildren.
Behind the scenes, Tuan Ngoc said he was lucky after winning the title of runner-up in the 2024 Mister World contest and having more opportunities to participate in community and social activities. Coming to the Vietnamese Family Shelter, witnessing the difficulties that the children go through made Tuan Ngoc more sympathetic, wanting to contribute more to help the children overcome adversity.
In the program, Tuan Ngoc and Quynh Anh supported the children to overcome the challenge. After the rounds, Hoang Xuan Phuoc's family came in third, chose to draw the logo board and received 16 million VND. Mach Thi An Dieu's family came in second, also chose to draw the logo board, and received 22 million VND. This week's first prize went to Ha Minh Den's family. After completing the special challenge, Minh Den received 50 million VND in prize money from the program.
In addition, King Tuan Ngoc and Runner-up Quynh Anh gave each family a special gift. Many donors and local people joined hands to raise more than 266 million VND to send to the characters. Each family was also given a new bicycle by the donors to help the children on their way to school more conveniently.
Thus, in episode 128, the program Vietnamese Family Warmth awarded nearly 350 million VND to 3 disadvantaged people. Of which, the total prize from Hoa Sen Group was 88 million VND, along with many meaningful gifts.
The program Vietnamese Family Warmth airs at 8:20 p.m. every Friday on HTV7. The program is produced by Bee Media Company in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Television, with the support of Hoa Sen Home Construction Materials & Interior Supermarket System (Hoa Sen Group) and Hoa Sen Plastic Pipe - Source of Happiness.
