Since reuniting with Vietnamese football, Coach Troussier has always had a rather “strange” way of choosing his staff. During the Vietnam national team’s training sessions, the French coach always chooses more than 2 captains at the same time and rotates who will wear the captain’s armband in each match. And recently, the Thai national team surprisingly has the same method as Vietnam.
To prepare for the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, the "War Elephants" began to gather from November 9. Coach Mano Polking discussed and selected two captains from the Thai team's executive committee. Chanathip Songkrasin and Theerathon Bunmathan are the two brightest stars and have received the most trust from the team. These two players will take turns wearing the captain's armband in the first two matches of the Thai team in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Chanathip Songkrasin has always been elected captain of the Thai team.
Madam Pang shared: “Regarding the selection of captains, coach Mano Polking and I discussed and decided to elect two captains, Chanathip and Theerathon. We trust both of them, because they have experience and the ability to command their teammates and unite the young players.”
“I had the opportunity to talk to many players, everyone is determined and ready to fight with all their might. Because we know that the World Cup qualifiers are an important event for the Thai people. Therefore, we want to go to the third qualifying round again. But I have to admit that it is not easy, when Thailand is in the same group with China and especially a strong team like Korea. I believe that anything can happen, if everyone works together,” Madam Pang added.
This is the first time the Thai team has elected two captains at the same time.
In the opening match, the Thai team (ranked 112th in FIFA) will face the Chinese team (ranked 79th in the world ) on November 16 at Rajamangala Stadium. “China is a strong team, ranked higher than Thailand on the FIFA rankings. But when playing at home and especially at Rajamangala Stadium, I believe that Thailand is ready to fight with all its strength for the honor and for the country's football fans,” Madam Pang affirmed.
